Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 133716, 1916.
Application led J une15, 1914. Serial No. 845,274.
T0 all 'whom it may concern Be it known thatI, SYVERT JosTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paving-Block Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the subject of paving blocks, and has special reference to a novel form and combination of roadebed and gutter-forming blocks.
The primary 'object ofthe present invention is to provide a substantial and thoroughly practical road-bed construction by a nc-vel combination and arrangement of roadbed blocks and curb and gutter blocks, each of which is formed with novel interlocking and overlapping joint portions, ,which because of their simplicity7 greatly facilitate the laying of the road-bed and consequently present many advantages, chief among which is time and labor saving. i;
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction of this character wherein all ofthe blocksv are laid so that the possibility Y:of one block sinking below the other is reduced to a minimum, thereby producing a road surface that is not only firm and durable when first laid, but which increases in solidity Ynnder the weight of continuous traffic.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel com- 'binations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claim.
Forea full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in whichl Figure l is a transverse sectional view of a road-bed constructed of the blocks forming the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan ViewY showing two rows of blocks laid in road-bed formation.Y Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the gutterfand-curb-forming blocks. Fig. 4 is aE perspective view of one of the roadsbed blocks.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts in theY several figures of the drawings. Y
In carrying out the present invention, it is preferable to use composition block which comprises a base of concrete and a surface of ferred.
f Regardless of the kind of material Ythat is used in the blocks, they'always have the same structural characteristics which may be best observed in detail in FigsQS and 4 of the drawings, wherein the reference nu- Ymeral l designates the combination gutter andcurb forming block in itsentirety, while the rectangular road-bed block unit is designated by the reference numeral 2.
With special reference to the combination gutterY and curb blocks 1, it will be observed Y that each of the same comprises a body portion which has formed atnone side of its upper surface a flat curb face 3, and at its opposite side is provided with a flat gutter face 4 whichmeets at an angle with an upwardly inclined gutter face terminating at the outer edge of the curb face 3. VVThe said blocks 1 are lpreferably* elongated and formed at ene end with a projecting subi stantially inverted YVTshaped tenon 6, while the opposite end thereof is provided with a complemental angular-end mortise 7 which is similar in configuration tol` the angular projecting tenon. rIhe vertical side 8 of the block l is varranged to form a supporting abutment for thesidewalk material, while the opposite side 9 is formed into an offset anchor flange which projects from the body of the block to provide a locking joint shoulder 10.
The road-bed blocks 2 shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings are *of such a construction that they may be placed `in position to form the road-bedfby being laid upon either of their flat faces. That 'is to say, these blocks are reversibleso that when they are used Ywith either one of their flat faces exposed, the same interlocking and overlapping with adjoining slabs is accomplished. Each of these blocks 2 essentially comprises Yvertically disalined rectangular members 1l and l2, which disalinement produces projecting flange portions 13 and 14 on opposite sides of the block. In other words, this arrangement produces locking joint shoulders l5 on all sides of the block, which shoulders are all in the same horizontal plane, though it will be obvious that the flanges projecting from the lower member of the block will always underlie flanges on an adjacent block, while the flanges projecting from the upper member of the block will always overlap with the lower flanges of an adjacent block. Thus, this construction provides two sides of the block with a joint shoulder which lies beneath an overlapping joint shoulder of two adjacent blocks, and also provides the two opposite sides of the block with a joint shoulder which overlaps with joint shoulders of two adjacent blocks, thereby producing a very effective locking of one block with another and at the same time presenting a joint which tends to support adjoining slabs. In connection with the laying of these roadbed blocks 2, it is preferable to place each of the same so that the center of the road-bed is raised high enough to produce a water-shed, or each of the blocks may be made with a sufiicient curve to accomplish this result in a more pronounced manner. In either event, this construction forms an arch which rests against the interlocking curb blocks so that any weight placed upon the center would have a tendency to bear toward the sides causing the outer edges of the curb blocks to be pushed farther down into the ground, and at the same time more firmly uniting all of the overlapping portions of the road-bed blocks.
lVith further reference to the combination curb-and-gutter blocks l, it will be observed that the body of the same may be varied in width so that the gutter face i is wider than that shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings` but even with the increased width of the body of the curb block, the anchor flange 9 and joint shoulder l0 are always preserved. The widened curb block is shown in Fig. 2, and also in Fig. l, and it will be understood that the reason for this variation in width is solely to adapt the blocks to the particular width of the road bed being constructed.
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the method of constructing the blocks forming the subject of the present invention, and the manner of laying the same will be readily apparent. However, in this connection it may be said that after the road-bed has been graded according to the specifications of the road, the curb blocks are put in position so that their side faces 8 form an abutment for the sidewalk Inaterial S, while the tenon ends 6 are laid so that they i'it into the angular mortise 7 of the next adjoining block. l/Vhen the curb blocks are laid in this fashion,` a continuous joint shoulder l0 is produced which is adapted to receive thereon one of the joint shoulders l5 of the road-bed blocls2 so that the upper face of the latter is flush with the flat gutter face et 0f the curb block. The laying of the curb and roadbed blocks may be carried on indefinitely, in each instance the lcurb blocks interlocking with each other at their ends while the side of the same which iS provided with a `joint shoulder engages with one of the road-bed blocks. Each of the latter blocks or slabs have two of their projecting portions overlapping with locking joints of an adjoining block, and also two of their projecting portions held down by two adjoining blocks as previously mentioned, thus forming the complete road-bed.
I claim:
A paving construction including a gutter section formed by a series of interlocking combination curb and gutter forming blocks, each comprising a body portion provided with a flat gutter face and a flat curb face at different levels, and a ila-t inclined gutter face connecting said curb and gutter faces, said blocks also having at one end a projecting tenon comprising a horizontal portion and an intermediate vertically extending portion, and having at the opposite end an angular end mortise similar in configuration to the said projecting tenon, the edge of said body below the flat gutter face being laterally off-set to form a locking shoulder which merges with the projecting horizont-al portions of the said tenon, and road-bed blocks engaging with said shoulder of the combined curb-and-gutter forming blocks.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix .my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
