To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. ATKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve- Grinders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a valve grinder.
The object of the invention is to provide an implement of the character described designed for the purpose of grinding valves of internal combustion engines so that the valves will seat perfectly.
As is well known the valves of internal combustion engines wear irregularly and permit a certain amount of leakage through the seat on account of an imperfect seating of the valve when so worn, and therefore it becomes necessary to grind the valves and seats so that they will fit together perfectly and thus prevent leakage and a consequent loss of power. It is for the purpose of grinding said valves and seats that the device herein described has been provided.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts an example of which is given in this specification and illus- 4 trated in the accompanying drawings where- I which imparts rotation to the latter.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line aa of Figs. 2 and 4 and Fig. I is a transverse sectional view taken on the line b-b of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures the numeral 1 refers to a casting forming a frame and rotatably mounted therein are the shafts 2 and 3 arranged at right angles to each other and the latter of which is hol low. Integral with these respective shafts are the respective worm gears 4 and 5 in mesh with each other and the formerTfif e hollow shaft 3 rotates upon a pin 6 which is keyed to the frame and forms a bearing for said hollow shaft. Fixed to the projecting end of the shaft 2 is the arm7 which may be oscillated back and forth through the handle 8 which is pivoted to the free end of said arm. Fixed to the projecting end of the shaft 3 is a disk 9 whose outer face is concave to fit the convex surface of the valve 10 and interposed between said disk and the frame 1 are the anti-friction bearings 11. The concave face of the disk 9 has the dowel pins 12, 12 projecting therefrom which seat in corresponding recesses provided in the convex surface of the valve 10.
When it is desired to grind the valve, an abrasive such as powdered emery, or some other suitable abrasive, is placed between the seat and the contacting portion 13 of the valve and the grinder then applied to the valve as shown in Fig. 3 and the arm 7 oscillated back and forth through the handle S so as to give the valve a half turn in each direction and this process is continued until the valve and seat are ground down to a perfect fit.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described including a frame, two shafts arranged at right angles to each other and rotatably mounted in said frame, intermeshing gears fixed to said respective shafts through which rotation is imparted from one shaft to the other, a disk, whose outer face is concaved, fixed to one shaft and means for rotating the other shaft.
2. A device of the character described including a frame, two shafts arranged at right angles to each other and rotatably mounted in said frame one being hollow and mounted upon a pin bearing, intermeshing gears fixed to said respective shafts through which rotation is imparted from one shaft to the other one of the shafts being hollow and mounted upon a pin bearing, a disk, whose outer face is concaved, fixed to the hollow shaft, valve engaging means carried by the concaved face of said disk, and means for rotating the other shaft.
3. A device of the character described including a frame, a pin fixed therein, a hollow shaft mounted on said pin, a disk, whose outer face is concaved, fixed to the outer end of said shaft, dowel pins projecting from the concaved face of said disk, a shaft rotatably mounted in suitable bearings, in said frame, and extending at right angles to the hollow shaft, intermeshing gears carried by the respective shafts through which rotaname to this specification in the presence of 21011 is imparted from the latter to the two subscribing witnesses.
