JOHN R. DEERING, OF EMPORIA, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND J. M. BIOKEL, OF SAME PLACE.
VALVE- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,195, dated June 30, 18 85.
Application filed July 19, 1884. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN R. DEERING, of Emporia, in the county of Daviess and State of Missouri, have invented a new and 11m proved Valve-Gear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the cut-off 15 mechanism, showing also the valve in section;
and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view.
A is the pillow-bloclz,and B the main shaft, of an engine. On the shaft is attached a wheel or disk, 0, having a flange or rim, (1, the inthree-quarters of the circumference, and the remaining portion is formed with an eccentric, b. On the box A of the shaft B is attached a horizontal slideway, D, that carries a slide, E, which has arms at its ends carrying friction-rollers F F, that take within the rim a of the wheel 0. To the slide E is attached the valve-rod G. The slide E is provided with a longitudinal groove,within which is the slide- 0 way D. Plates E are bolted to the slideE in front of the slideway D to hold said slide on the slideway, as shown clearly in the drawings. The eccentric portion b of the rim is wide enough at its mid-length to cause the full movement of the valve when in the rotation 5 of the shaft the eccentric comes into contact with either roller on the slide E. The valve is thus fully moved during an eighth of a revolution of the shaft, and remains still until the eccentric reaches the opposite side. In other 0 words, the-exhaust is open for three-quarters of the time of revolution. This gives a free exhaust and reduces the back-pressure on the piston to a minimum.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim 4,5 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pillow-block A, main shaft 13, mounted therein, the box A,provided on its upper side with the horizontal slideway D, the slide E, having a longitudinal groove, the plates E, bolted to the slide, as shown, for holding it to the slideway, the friction-rollers F at opposite ends of the slideway, the flanged disk (3 a, secured to shaft B and provided with the eccentric portion b, and the valve-rod G, removably connected to the slide E and to a slide-valve, substantially as set forth.
JOHN R. DEERING.
