Be it known that we, RICHARD R. .GREEN and EMMET R. WHITE, citizens of the United States, residing at Raton, in the county of Colfax and State of New Mexico, have invented a new and useful Feed-Water Heater; and -we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to Van improved auxiliary steam heating means for the branch pipe connection between the usual injector and the boiler check, so .as to additionally heat the water from the injector prior to it passing to the boiler check, thereby saving fuel and the like.
As an object of the invention it is the aim to provide a plurality of partially telescoped funnels in the branch pipe connection, so that the water in the branch pipe will not `only be well agitated, but the steam will be sprayed into the water, thereby thoroughly heating the saine before it reaches the boiler check.
In practical :fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a portion of a locomotive, showing the branch pipe connection between the injector and the boiler check, illustrating the auxiliary steam heating pipe from the dome to the branch pipe. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the branch pipe connection, showing the funnel shaped nozzles arranged in the branch pipe, and their connections to the steam pipe. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing a modified arrangement of spraying nozzles. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the usual form of injector, and two denotes the branch pipe, which extends from the injector and connects at 3 to the boiler check, adjacent the boiler 4. Leading from the steam dome 5 is a steam pipe 6, which has branches 7 and S extending into the branch pipe. Arranged in the branch pipe 2, and braced relative to its interior surface is a plurality of funnel shaped nozzles 9, 10 and l1, and through the rear wall of the nozzle 9 the branch 7 of the steamv pipe extends,` so asl to spray the steamv through the nozzle 9, and into the water thereof. It is to be noted that the conical nozzles partially telescope one anothers rear walls, as shown at 12, therefore, the'steam sprays and heats the vwater as it leaves the branch 7 and enters the nozzle 9, and also sprays and heats the water as it leaves vthe nozzle 9 and enters the nozzle 10, and asit passes from the nozzle 10 to the nozzle 11, and finally sprays and heats the water as it leaves the nozzle 11. The nozzle 9 where it partially telescopes the nozzle 10, is suitably braced, on the interior of the nozzle 10, and the nozzle 10 is braced relative to the interior of the nozzle 11. A plurality of nozzles .are braced by the braces 14 with relation to the interior of the branch pipe. It will be observed that the small end of the nozzle 10 is closed` and the discharge of the steam is attained through the openings 15, which are adjacent the rear of the nozzle 11, the steam in passing out of the opening 15 sprays, agitates and heats the water more than if passing out through the small end, for the steam in passing out through the opening 15 travels along the interior conical wall of the nozzle 11, and exits at its small end, where it again sprays and heats the water.
In Fig. 4 there are four branches 17 18, 19 and 20, leading into a branch pipe connection, and each one of these branches 17, 18, 19 and 20 terminates in a nozzle 21. However, these nozzles do not partially telescope, as shown in the other figures, but the steam in entering the branch pipe by way of the nozzles sprays into and heats the water thoroughly before it passes to the boiler check.
The steam pipe 6 may be connected to the steam dome, or to the fountain (not shown) of the locomotive, or to any other suitable steam supply of the locomotive, and may be provided with suitable means such as avalve (not shown) to be manipulated by the engineer, for controlling the steam from the dome or from the fountain.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is l. In combination with a branch pipe connection, a plurality of telescoped nozzles therein, means for bracing said nozzles and holding them spaced from the interior surface of the branch pipe, and a steam pipe having a branch entering said branch pipe connection and extending into one of said nozzles.
2. In combination with a branch pipe connection, a plurality of telescoped nozzles, the telescoped portions of said nozzles being spaced apart from one another, means for holding said nozzles spaced from the interior surface of the branch pipe connection, and a steam pipe having a branch extending into one of said nozzles, whereby the steam may be sprayed into the water for heating the same as the steam passes from one nozzle to the other.
3. In combination with a branch pipe connection, a plurality of telescoped nozzles, the telescoped portions of said nozzles being spaced apart from one another, means for holding said nozzles spaced from the interior surface of the branch pipe connection, and a steam pipe having a branch extending into one of said nozzles, whereby the steam may be sprayed into the water for heating the same as the steam passes from one nozzle to the other, one of said nozzles having openings in the conical side walls thereof, whereby the steam may be injected laterally.
4. In combination with a branch pipe connection, a plurality of nozzles arranged therein, means for bracing the nozzles relative to the interior surface of the branch pipe connection, a steam pipe, and connections between the nozzles and the steam pipe.
