DOOR 0F HOPPE-R-'BOTTOM CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
Application filed November 17, 1913. Serial No. 801,538.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD WEBB BUR- Nnr'r, of the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Dominion of zen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Doors of Hopper-Bottom Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates more particularly to the construction of the hopper walls or flanges of trough-doors to form pockets for receiving the flanges of the door oredges of the walls as the case may be in order to prevent leakage of granular materials at the ends of the doors; the object of the present invention being to provide an alternative construction to that disclosed in my pending application Serial No. 655253 filed October 17, 1911, for improvements in convertible cars. To this end I provide the edges of the hopper walls or the flanges of the doors with a strip of metal and a distance piece separating the strip from the wall or ange.
For full comprehensionl however, of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the hopper wall provided with my invention and showing a portion of the door in position to engage the pocket; Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view through ay portion of the hopper bottom of a car and'illustra-ting my invention; Fig. 8 is a similar view to Fig. 1 of a door with its langeprovided with a pocket according to mypresent invention.
Canada, a citi` The hopper wall is indicated at b and the door at c, the door being of trough crosssection thus presenting flanges c. According to my invention the members, the hopper-walls or door-flange each have a metal plate d and a distance piece e secured thereto by rivets f thus forming a pocket to receive the other member, the thickness of the distance piece being equal to that of the member to be received in the pocket, while 'the edges of the pocket thus formed are flared as at g to facilitate entrance thereinto.
What I claim is as follows 1. The combination with a hopper-wall member and the flange of a troughed door, of a strip of metal and a distance piece secured to the outside of one of the said members along the edge thereof for the purpose of forming a pocket to receive the other member.
2. In a dump-car the combination with a hopper having hopper-walls and a door for controlling the discharge therefrom, the ends of said door being bent at right angles to the main length thereof toward said hopper-walls; of a strip of metal and distance piece secured to the outside of each of said walls along one edge thereof for the purpose of presenting a pocket to receive the bent ends of the door when the latter is in closed position the free edges of the strip'and the wall towhich it is attached being oppositely bent to present a flared mouth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my vname to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD 'WEBB BURNETT.
