To `all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosurH F. COMEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city ofChicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Door Mechanism, ofl which I do declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawing, forming vpart of this` specification. f
The present invention relates more particularly to doo-r mechanism for railway freight cars, and the invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the claims at the'end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown as applied to an all-steel car door, but it will be understood that the invention is susceptible of wider application;
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation showing part ofa car door embodying my invention, parts of the surrounding wall of the car being also shown. Fig. 2 is a view upon an enlarged scale, in horizontal section, on line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
One main object of my present invention is to provide an improved construction of door whereby the passage of rain, dust, cin- -ders and the like, around the front edge of' the door and thence into the car, may be effectively avoided. l
The wall or body 10 of the door is shown as made of sheet metal'. Adjacent the side opening or doorway of the car wall is placed a vertical door stop 15 that may be attached to the 'wall of the car, as by means of rivets 1G. In the preferred form of my invention, the door stop 15 consists of a Z'- shaped metal bar, the inner flangeof which is secured to the wall of the car, and from the outwardly projecting flange of which eX- tends a rearwardly projecting flange 17 formed, preferably, with an outwardly flared or curved edge portion 18. Above the doorway extends a metal track 20 whereon will travel the rollers Q1 of the hangers 29. that are riveted or bolted, as at 23, to the car door 25. The car door 25 is shown as formed of sheet. metal, preferably corrugated to give additional strength thereto. At the front edge of the car door Q5, and preferably ormed integral therewith, is'.a member that comprises a rearwardly open, U-shaped channel, that coperates with the door stop in excluding rain, dust., cinders and the like around the front edge of the door. By
preference, this U-shaped part or channel at the front edge of the door 'is formed integral with the body 25 of the door by bending the vfront edge of the metal of the door so as to form an outwardly projecting flange 26 and a rearwardly' projecting flange 27.
By referencemore particularly to Fig. 2 of the drawing, it will be seen that when the door is in closed position, the channel shaped member or part at the front edge thereof will engage with the rearwardly projecting flange 17 of the vertical door-stop'and thus prevent the passage of rain, cinders and the like around the front `edge of the door. Inaslnuch as the door stop 15 has its rearwardly extending flange 17 outwardly flared, and the rearwardly extending flange Q7 of the channel shaped member at the front edge lof the door is also flared, the engagement of the outer portion of the rearwardly extending liange 27 with the inner face of the flange 17 of the door stop will insure a very tight joint ,between these parts and will also tend to crowd inwardly the door as it reaches its closed position.
Obviously, the precise details of construction above-set out may be Varied without departing from the spirit of theinvention.
Havingr thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In car door mechanisni,tlie combination with a door stop and a projecting part against which the front ledge of the door will abut when in closed position, of a sliding door provided at its front edge with an outwardly and rearwardly projecting part forming va rearwardly open channel extend-Y ing vfrom top to bottom of the door, said channel being movable freely into engagement .with and disengagement 'from said door stop.
2. In car door mechanism, the combination with a door stop having an outwardly and rearwardly extending part, of a sliding door having at its front edge a part projecting outwardly and rearwardly from the door and forming a rearwardly open channel, said part. being adapted to slide freely into and out of engagement with the rearwardly projecting flange of the door' stop.

In car door mechanism, the combination with a door stop having an outwardly and rearwardly projecting flange extending from top to bottom of the door, of. a sliding door haring at itsfront edge a part projecting outwardly and rearwardly from the door and forming a rearwardly open channel extending from top to bottom of the door, said part being freely movable into and out of engagement with the rearwardly projecting lange of the door` the rear flange of said door stop being outwardly vliared.
4. In car door mechanism, the vcombination with a door stop comprising a vertically disposed Z-bar having an outwardly projecting flange or member and a rearwardly projecting flange or member, and a sliding door having at its front edge a rear vflange of said ,Z-shaped bar.
5. In car door mechanism .comprising the combination of a door stop having a rear- -ivardly extending ange, of a sliding metal ldoor` having its ,front edge opened outwardly and then rearwardly to :form a rearwardly open channel-shaped part arranged to slide freely into and out of engagement with the rearwardly extending flange of said door stop. l
