Description
EBENEZER BURNET STEPHENS, 0F BROYVNVILLE, NEBflt. SKA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WIRE'STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,293, dated August 22, 12371.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that l7 Ennnnznn Bunnnr S'rn- PHENS, of Brownville, inthe county ot' Nemaha, aud State oi" Nein-askin have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Regulating Virc- Stretche 5 and I do hereby decla-re that the iiollewin is a full, clear, and exact description thereot, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the sanne, rei'erenee being had to the accompanying drawing forming part oi' this speci iicatiou, in. which- Figure l isa side view of my improved wirestretcher. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the bar or stay. Fig. 3 is a side view of a modified form of the stretcher.
Si nl i lar letters oi' rci'eren ce indica-tc correspon ding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a simple, convenient, and effective device for stretch` in the wires of wirc-fences, and hol din g said wire at a uniform tension, however much they maybe contracted or expanded by changes oi' temperature, or when pressed against by stock or other mea-ns; and it consists in the construction and combination vof the various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the posts, and B the wires ofthe fence. One end of the wires B is attached to the end post of the fence or section of fence the wires oi' which are to be stretched. The other ends o t the wires 13 are attached to the stay or bar C by means oil the pins D, to which pins the ends of the wires are attached, and uround which.
they are wound. The pins l) may be iliade of wood or iron, and their projecting ends are sijlnared oit" to enable them to be taken hol d oii' by a wrench and turned to adjust the length or' the the wires B, so that the said stays or bars may be kept in an upright position. To the ends oi the bars or stays (l are attached the ends ofthe branches oli' the wire-rope E. The rope E passes Over guide-pulleys F, one or more el? which are pivoted to the posts G, and to its other endis attached the suspended weight il. lhe weight ll may be a box, iilled with earth, sand, stones, or other hear ymateri al, as may he mest convenient. 'ln cases where the .fence passes over uneven ground',"or wh ere from other causes greater power is required, alever, l, may be iu Lerposed between the rope E and weight ll. lnV this case the lower end of the .lever I is pivoted to the lower part oi' the post and the weight Il siispcnded :trom its upper end, the rope E bein attached to sa-id lever nearer to or Jfurther Vtroni its pivotiu point, according as more or less power may be required.
.by this device the wires ll will always be held at a uniform tension however much they maybe expanded and conti-acted by elntnges of temperattire, and, should they be pressed against by stock or other means, they will ld and will be brought back to their i'ornier position as soon as the pressure may be removed, the wires being all the time held at the .fame tension, and thus being in no danger of being' broken.
.lzlaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters .Patent-4- l.. The adjustable pins l), in conilnnation with the wires B and sta-y or bar i), substantially as herein shown and described7 and [for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination o1" the wire-rope E, pulleys F, one 0r more, and weight l-l, whether the lever l. beused or not, with the posts (i, stay or bar O, and wires l, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpos l set Forth.
