FENCE-WIRE TIGHTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,661, dated March 26, 1901.

Be it known that I, PETER BOGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fence-Wire 'Iighteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in fence-wire tightener-s, and has for its object to provide a device which is simple and inexpensive in construction, very effective in operation, and which will automatically take up the slack caused by the expansion or stretching of the wires and maintain a uniform tension upon them.

My invention consists in the features and combination of features, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of a wire fence, showing an end post and two intermediate posts with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a sectional view on line so no of Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4, details of a modification of the arms.

In the drawings, in which like letters of reference denote like parts throughout the several views, A represents an end post of a section of wire fence provided with a series of elongated vertical slots at, and B B two intermediate posts which are set about midway of the section of fence.

O is a box, made of wood or other suitable material, with stones or weights 19 therein.

D D are short arms or levers, one end of each pivoted to the post A and the opposite end to the box 0 by means of bolts and nuts 0. These arms instead of having a single hole in each end may be provided with a slot in each end, as seen in Fig. 3, or provided with a series of holes, as seen in Fig. 4, and by moving the bolt into different positions in the slot when the slot is used or moving the bolt into different holes when the series of holes are used the distance of the box 0 from the post A may be increased or diminished. As the weight of the box is increased it moves away from the post A, and as the weight is diminished it moves toward the said post.-

E represents guides or braces bolted or otherwise secured to the opposite sides of the A and keep the box in alinement with the fence.

F represents a series of line-wires of the fence secured loosely in staples on said posts B B, said wires passing through the elongated slots in the postA and attached to box (1. The weight of the box C may be regulated by increasing or diminishing the number of stones or weights therein, and thus the tension on the wires regulated. The arms D D are made of such length as to per unit the box to take up any expansion of the wires of the fence, but at the same time not long enough to allow the box to drop down too far and rest upon the ground.

By the use of my invention I dispense with the trouble and inconvenience incident to the breaking of the wires due to changes of temperature and the raising of the posts out of the ground and the throwing the fence out of alinement, which is now quite common where the tension on the wires becomes too great.

The elongated slots in the post A are for the purpose of allowing a little vertical play of the fence-wires.

The operation is as follows: The several different parts being assembled, the desired quantity of stones or weights are placed in the box, and this causes the box to move downward and also laterally away from the post A by. means of the arms D D and draws all the wires of the fence taut and keeps them at a uniform tension.

If desired, instead of having the arms pivoted to the outer surface of'the end post and box recesses may be formed in said post and box and the ends of the arms pivoted therein, thereby permitting the position of the ends of the guides E to be changed on the end post without interfering with the arms D.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A fence-wire tightener comprising a post, a receptacle attached to the fence-wires and adapted to receive weights, and arms for pivoting said receptacle to said post, substantially as shown and described.

2. A fence-wire tightener comprising a post, a receptacle adapted to receive weights, and provided with guides, and means for pivoting said receptacle to said post, substantially as shown and described.

3. A fencewire tighten er com prisin g a post, a receptacle adapted to receive weights, and provided with upper and lower arms pivoted to the post, and guides adapted to slide on said post, substantially as shown and described.

4. A fence-wire tightener comprisin g a post, a receptacle adapted to be attached to the fence-wires and to receive Weights,and guides adapted to slide on said post and keep said receptacle in alinement with the same, substantially as shown and described.

5. The combination of a fence having posts, and line-wires, a receptacle attached to said line-wires and provided with weights, and means for pivoting said receptacle to said fence, substantially as shown and described.

6. A fence-wire tightener comprising a post,

and support, substantially as shown and described.
