:romv PORTER SHIELD-EB, OF NYACK, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOBTO HEY WOOD, STBASSER & VOIG'T LITHOGRAPHIC COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, Y., A COBPOBIATION OF NEW YORK.
COMBINED SHOW-CARD AND DISPLAY-RACK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN Pon'rnn SHEARER,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident.
of the village of Nyack, in the county of Rockland, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Show-Cards and Dis lay-Racks, of which the following isa speci cation.
The invention'relates to devices for displaying and advertising goods for sale, and its objects are, among others, to provide a device of this character which may be made of card board or other similar material, and is so constructed and arranged that when not in use its parts may be folded'one upon another so that they will occupy the space of but a few sheets of the material so as to be convenient for packing, shipping and storing, and which when placed in position for use will be self-supporting in an n right position, will afforda sultable sur ace for the display of advertising or-other printed matter and will also support samples of the goods in connection with which they are used.
Further objects are the construction and arrangement of the parts so as to reduce the cost of manufacture and obtain a maximum of efiiciency for thepurpose designed.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a combined show card and display rack embodying the improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig.
3 is a plan of the two parts of which the del the lower corners of the apertures slits D supporting bracket, and a short distance-be extend downwardly, so that the material may be turned outwardly to form a shelf E. The material is also provided centrally with a slot F adapted to receive the hook of the Specification of Letters Patent.
low each opening is an open-ended slot N which receives the said bracket.
The parts abovedescribed are made of one piece of sheet material, and, as will be seen, may be formed by one movement of a suitable die.
The member G consists of a substantially triangular piece of sheet material, secured to the back of the board, and forming a support therefor, so that the entire device presents an appearance similar to that of an easel. It has angular cut-out portions H and I corresponding in length to the openings B and C, and, when the sembled positioned behind saidv openings. Extensions J and K proceed from the 'bot tom of these cut-out portions, and'the material, at thepoint where these extensions join the bottom of the support G, is pro- 'vided with slots L and" M. The upper end or apex of the support G is also provided with an extension which maybe folded sidewise and pasted or otherwise secured to the back of the board A to secure the parts together. The extremities of the extensions J and K have an upward and slightly inward projection forming a catch or hook O which passes through the slot F of the shelf and holds the said shelf in position. The resiliency of the material will be sufficient to permit this catch to operate, without other provision.
The engagement ofthe' two members of the device below the openings is provided for by the slots L and M WllICll permit the extensions J and K, after passing through the slots N, to move upwardly and engage on opposite sides of the board A. In this manner the parts of the device, when the portion P is secured to the back of the board, are securely held against separation.
After the device is assembled the extensions J and K forming the supporting brackets, the shelves E. supported thereby and the portion of the support G at the back of the board ma all be turned so as to lie flat against the ront and back of the board, until they are put in use. It will be seen that the shelves, and the lower edges of the cut-out portions of G form a horizontally disposed support for an article placed therein, and that the rear edge of said cut-out portions andthe sides of the openings of the board form vertically disposed supports Patented Ma 16, 1916.

., tended to be supported therein.
In the device as shown the folding over of the parts may be provided for by taking, a sheet of card board, or other material, and scoring it at one side of the line of the fold, then turning the material back-so that the scored portion acts as a hinge.
One or more of the openings B may be employed, as desired, the upper end of the support G maybe secured to the board A in any other desired manner, as, for instance, in manner similar to the securement of the lower edge, and 'the shelves E. and other parts may be non-integral with the board or omitted entirely. Other changes in the details of construction and arrangement may also be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It will also be understood that in making the device of metal or other rigid material some of the parts will be modified within the sco e of the invention. Thus the shelf E will lie punched out and severed from the sheet and at the same time provided with notches in its side edges by which it may be positioned and held in the bottom of the opening.
