UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. s. MOYES, or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
DETAGHARLE RIM FOR VEHICLE-WHEELS.
Application filed May 22, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. S. MoYEs,
a citizen of the United States, and resident.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth. and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a wheel showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 22, Fig. 1;.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the felly-band; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of the tire-carrying-rim; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of aportion of the locking-ring; Fig. 6 is a section on theline 66, Fig. 4; Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the locking-plate; and Fig. 8 is a view of a portion of the wheel showing thetool in place for shifting the locking-ring.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the felly; 2 the felly'band fitting around the felly. This felly-band is provided with the studs 3. A flange 4 is adapted to be engaged by the inner half of the tire-rim 5.
The numeral 6 designates the valveopening.
The felly has the ratchet-plate 7 inserted therein and held in place by the screws 8 which project therefrom for the purpose fully hereinafter set forth. 7
The tire-rim 5 is made in two sections, divided along the line 9, and these sections are locked together by the locking-ring 10,
said locking-ring consisting of a split spring-ring having the flanges 11, which engage the ribs 12 on the inner face of the tire-rim 5. WVhen the locking-ring 10 has been adjustedin position with its flanges 11 engaging the ribs 12 of the tire-rim, the ring is expanded and an insert-block 13 is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916. Serial No. 29,880. I
interposed between the ends of the lockingring, said block being secured in place by the screw 14:, as clearly indicated in Figs. 4
and 6.' The ends of the ring are beveled as at 10 and the edges of the block 13 are also beveled to engage therewith. By making.
the tire-rim in two halves, it'is apparent that the tire may he slipped over one half, and then the other half inserted, thereby doing away with the necessity of expanding the tire to get it overthe flanges 15 of the tire-rim. In removing the tire, it is only necessary to remove the locking-ring 10, whereby the tire-rim sections can be separated and the tire quickly removed. The rim sections overlap each other as indicated at 16. In order-to bring the valve opening in the tire-rim 5 into register with the valve opening 6 of the felly-band, 2, the tire-rim has thenotch 17, which is adapted to engage the lug 18 on the felly-ba'nd. The felly-rim carrying the tire is slipped on to the felly-band and the locking-ring 19 is then adjusted in position. This lockingring has the bayonet-joint slots 20, which are adapted to engage the studs 3 on the I felly-band, and when said bayonet-joint slots have been brought into engagement withthe studs 3, the lockingring 19 is turned to complete the joint. To allow for this turning of the locking-ring without in any way interfering with the valve-opening 6, the locking-ring is provided with the recessed portion 21. f
In order to lock the locking-plate in position and prevent its shifting so as to release the bayonet joint, I provide the lockingplate 22, which has the ratchet-teeth 23- adapted to engage the ratchet-teeth 24 of the plate 7. The locking-plate 22 is provided with the slots 25, which are adapted to engage the threaded pins 8, said slots 25 providing for a certain amount of adjustment of the plate 22 in case the locking-ring 19 is not moved to its full extent; and, at the same time, permitting the lug 26 on said locking-plate to engage the notch 27 in the locking-ring 19. When the locking-plate 22 has been adjusted, the nuts 28 are appliedto the projecting screws 8 which hold the locking-plate in position. I
In order to remove the tire-rim, the nuts 28 are firstunscrewed and the locking-plate 22 removed. By means of the instrument 29,
illustrated in Fig. 8, the locking-ring 19'is then shifted. This instrument'has the piv A inner end 32 of the instrument is slightly pointed and fits into the recess 33 in the locking-ring. By moving the lever 29, the
locking-ring is shifted so as to release the slots 20 from the studs 3 whereupon the ring can be Withdrawn. After the locking-ring is withdrawn, it is a simple matter to remove the tire-rim 5, and the sections of the tire-rim are separated by removing the screw 14 and the block 13, whereby the spring-ring l0 collapses and the tire sections can be readily separated to release the tire. In reassembling the parts, the reverse of what has just been described takes place and the assembling can be done rapidly and with very little labor.
By my invention, I provide a simple form of detachable rim, which only requires the removal of two nuts and the shifting of the locking-ring to bring about a separation of the parts for the removal of the tire-rim.
Another feature of advantage in my construction is the locking-plate, which holds the locking-ring in position, said lockingplate being so arranged as to provide for the locking even though the ring may not be turned to its full extent, which under some conditions, may not be always possible.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In a detachable rim for vehicle-wheels, the combination with the felly, of a fellyband, a tire-rim, a locking-ring interposed between the folly-band and the said tire-rim, a bayonet joint connection between said ring and said telly-band, a vertical ratchet-plate on said felly, a removable locking-plate having ratchet-teeth engaging the teeth of said ratchet-plate, a projection on said locking plate engaging a recess formed in said locking-ring, and means for securing said locking-plate in position.
2. In a detachable rim for vehicle-wheels, the combination with the telly, of a fell band, a tire-rim engaging said band, a 100 ing-ring interposed between said telly-band and said tire-rim, a bayonet-joint connection between said locking-ring and said felly-band, a vertical ratchet-plate on said felly, threaded pins on said ratchet-plate, a, locking plate having ratchet-teeth adapted to engage the teeth of said ratchet-plate, said locking-plate having slots in the ends thereof engaging said pins, a projection on said locking-plate adapted to engage a recess formed in said locking-ring, and securing means on said pins for holding said lockingplate in position.
In testimony whereof, I the said GEORGE H. S. MoYEs, have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE H. S. MOYES.
