ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertain to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cigar making ma chines and particularly to bunch shaping, compressing and conveying mechanism therefor.
The object of the inventionv resides in the provision of a cigar making machine of the type named which can be operated by a single person in a simple manner and which can be transferred from one location to another with facility.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a cigar making machine embodying an improved construction of endless molds and which can be operated either by hand or foot power.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims: it being understood that various changes in the form, operation, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention; Fig. 2, a side view of same; Fig. 3, a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, an end view of the machine; Fig. 5, a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6, a section on the line 66 of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 a longitudinal section of the machine; Fig. 8, a detailed perspective view of abutting sections; and Fig. 9, a detailed perspective view disclosing the hinge connection between adjacent blocks of the conveyer.
Referring to the drawing the invention is shown as comprising a frame A which is adapted to be detachably secured to a supporting part. The frame A includes side members 11 and 12. Mounted in the side member 11 at each end thereof is an adjustable bearing 13, while corresponding adjustable bearing 14 is in the side member 12. The bearings 13 and 14 are adjustable longitudinally of the machine, and rotatably mounted in the bearings 13 and 14 at one end of the machine is a shaft 15, while another shaft 16 is rotatably mounted in the bearings 13 and 14 at the other end of the machine. Fixed on the shaft 15 are spaced square blocks 17, while corresponding blocks 18 are fixed on the shaft 16. Rotatably mounted in the side members 11 and 12 is a transverse shaft 19 which has fixed thereon a gear 20 meshing with a gear 21 fixed on the shaft 15. 'Also fixed on the shaft 19 is an operating crank 22 whereby said shaft may be manually rotated. Fixed on opposite ends of the shaft 19 respectively are pulleys 23 v for the purpose of connecting the shaft with a foot pedal (not shown) to enable the shaft to be rotated by means of foot power. Traveling about the shafts 15 and 16 is an endless conveyer B formed of a plurality of blocks 24. Adjacent blocks .24 are hingedly connected together at their inner edges as at 25 and the inner faces of these blocks 24 are provided withspaced recesses 26 adapted to receive thev blocks 17 and 18 during travel of the conveyer B. Each block 24 has formed on its outerface a dovetail rib 27 for a purpose that willpresently appear. Each rib 27 is provided at one end with a nib or stop 28 and further provided with a longitudinal groove. 29 opening through the opposite end thereof. Mounted in each groove 29 is a spring latch 30 for a purpose that will presently appear.
Secured to each block 24 is a mold section 31, said mold section being provided with a longitudinal dovetail groove 82 in one face thereof whereby it is detachably engaged with the desired block 24, the groove 32 of the mold section receiving the rib 27 of the block. The movement of the mold section on respective blocks 24 is limited by engagement of one end of the section with a stop 28. When a mold section has been fully applied to a given block 24 the latch 30 will automatically engage the end of the section remote from the stop 28 and thereby lock the section against disengagement from the block. Formed in one of the abutting faces of each section 31 is a longitudinally disposed recess 33 which corresponds in size.

In order to prevent the sections 31 and the blocks 2% from buckling during travel and also to force adjacent sections 31 firmly together there are mounted in the side member 11 vertically slidable bearings 35 each of which is forced downwardly by means of springs 36 respectively. Likewise there are mounted in the side member 12 vertically slidable bearings 37 corresponding to the bearings 35 and normally pressed downwardly by means of springs 38 respectively. Journaled in alined bearings 35 and 37 are rollers 39 which engage the outer faces of the sections 31 during the operation of the conveyer. Also mounted between the side members 11 and 12 are spring-pressed rollers A0 and 4:1 which engage the lower portion of the conveyer B, the tendency of said rollers being upward.
In the operation of the machine the workman at one end deposits the filler in one of the mold sections 31 and then rotates the shaft 19 through the medium of the crank '22 to bring the next mold section in position to receive the filler. This operation is continned as long as desired. As the mold sections reach the end of the machine remote from the workman supplying the filler, said section will open as will be obvious when the compressed filler is removed by the workman who is to roll the cigar.
What is claimed is 1. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a pair of spaced shafts, a conveyer trained around said shafts, said conveyer comprising a series of hingedly connected blocks, mold sections detachably interlocking with said blocks respectively, and means for operating the conveyer.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a pair of spaced shafts, a plurality of spaced bearings fixed on said shafts respectively, a conveyer trained around said shafts, said conveyer comprising a series of hingedly connected blocks, each of which is provided on its inner face with a plurality of recesses adapted to respectively receive the bearings on said shafts during the travel of the conveyer, mold sections detachably interlocking with said blocks respectively, and means for operating the conveyer.
