.UNITED {STATES IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,275, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. REMBERT, of
'Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Cotton-Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing formin gpart of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cotton-presses; and it consists in a press-case di vided transversely into two sections, having two followers pressing from both ends toward the center, and arranged to separate at the joint, each section moving away from the other just previous to the cessation of the movementof the followers, to open for tying and discharging the bale, the followers and case being actuated by a screw to which the power is applied, and a pair of toggle-jointed arms, all substantially as specified.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved press witha part sectioned, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper portion of the press.

A is a vertical frame of four posts, with a suitable base, B, for resting 011 the ground or floor of a building, while a portion of the frame extends into a pit or space below. 0 and 1) represent the press-case made in two sections, meet 1 ing together at one end, and arranged to slide toward or from each other on the posts of the frame. E is a follower for the section 0; it is jointed to the upper ends of two arms, which are jointed at their other ends to the blocks G, fitted on the right'and-left screw -threaded shaft H, mounted on the frame B, and screwing said blocks toward or from each other to raise or lower the follower, the power for actuating the press being applied to it. Arms I, jointed to the blocks G below said shaft and to a cross-head, K, actuate the upper follower L, through the medium of the rods M and cross-head N, rods S conneeting said cross-heads in the manner shown. The lower cross-head has rods 0 extendingup through the flanges of the case 0, with collars P above and below said flanges, but at such distance apart that during the first part of the movement of the cross-head K the case will not be raised,
but only during the latter part, after the collars have been brought into contact with said follower. The upper cross-head actuates levers Q for raising the upper section of the case, said levers being pivoted to the frame at R, and connected at their outer ends with the cross-head by rods S, so adjusted as to length that the levers will not be brought against the filanges of the case for raising it until the cross-head N and its follower have been moved down as far as required before the lifting of the case is to take place, which is just previous to the finishing of the pressing, as it is not desirable to lift the case until the bale is so far formed that the compression which takes place after the case lifts will mis shape it to any material extent. The upper section 1) moves downward again by its gravity 5 the lower one is moved up for closing by the rods 0 and cross-head K. The cross-head N is arranged to allow the follower L to swing away from the top of the case for filling. The case being thus moved away from the bale aifords access to it for tying and discharging. The pressure being applied to the opposite sides of the mass is calculated to compress it more effectually than when applied to one side only.
This plan of a divided case for opening to eX pose the completed bale may be employed in connection with the followers, however they or the sections of the case may be actuated.
Havin g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A presscase, made in two sections, and arranged for separating to expose the bale when pressed, in combination with two followers, arranged for simultaneously pressing on two opposite sides of the mass, substantially as specificd.
2. The combination of the right-and-left-threaded screw, toggle-jointed arms F I, blocks (3, followers E L, movable cross-heads K N, and rods M, substantially as specified.
3. The arrangement of the rods 0 with the cross-head K and section 0 of the case, substantially as specified.
4. The arrangement of the lever Q, with the section D of the case and the cross-head N, sub stantially as specified.
