DESK AND CHAIR COMBINATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed .Tune 23, 1915. Serial No. 35,865.
T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS L. BAIN, a citizen of the United States, yresiding at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Desk and Chair lom-biuations, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to school furniture and more particularly to combined chair and desk mountings.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a unitary structure which is simple. cheaply constructed, durable and etlicient and which embodies novel features of adjustment and support for the variousv parts.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in vconnection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section vshowing in bottom plan view the seat and desk casting.
Referring more particularly to the vdrawing. 1 represents a base which is substantially H-.shaped in plan and which is Drovided adjacent opposite ends with raised bosses 2 and 3 centrally recessed or apertured as shown at 4 and 5 to receive the seat and desk standards 6 and 7 respectively. Each of these standards is tubular and has slidabl'v mounted therein an extension standard 8 upon which is adjustably mounted an inverted cup-shaped collar 9 held in position by a set screw 10 and surrounding the main standard 6 or 7 with an interposed metallic washer 11 preferably of lead, babbitt or other similar material. The lower edge of the cup fits in an annular recess 12 for-med in :1 cup-shaped collar 13 adjustably secured upon the main tubular standard 6 or 7 by a set screw 14.. The upper end of the eXtenson standard 8 for the desk has secured thereto a spider-like casting 15 secured to the underneath side of the seat 16 while the extension 8 of the desk standard has secured thereto crescent-shaped casting 17 which 1s bolted to the underneath side of the desk 18. The castings 15 and 17 may be secured on the respective extensions by a set screw 19 or may be formed as an integral part thereof` if desired. As shown, the lower edge of the cup-shaped collar 9 rests upon a washer 20 which is interposed between the lower edge of the cup and the base of the recess 12. The extension standard 8 therefore v has a two-point support, z'. e. upon the upper end of the tubular standard 6 or 7 and upon the cup collar 13. Also the extension is laterally braced by reason of the overhang of the collar 9 engaging the side walls ofv the standards 6 or 7.
The standards 6 and 7 may be secured within the sockets 4 and 5 in any suitable manner such as by shrinking or sweating and the parts may assume any desired dimension or be of any suitable material without departing from the spirit or scope ofthe invention.
. What is claimed is A device of the character described including a base having an upright tubular boss, a
tubular standard fitted and secured at its lower end in said boss, a collar adjustably mounted upon said standard and provided with an annular groove in its upper edge, a packing seated within said groove, a set screw securing said collar to the tubular standard, an extension standard slidably mounted in the tubular standard, an inverted cup-shape collar slidably mounted upon the extension standard and having` its depending flange fitted within the groove of the first-named collar and engaging said packing, packing within said second collar, and a set screw for adjustably securing said second collar to the extension standard.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
