. Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picking-Motions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to picking motions for looms, and it has for its object to produce a simple and improved picking motion whereby the shuttle will be thrown at the proper time withgreat exactness and force.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple andefiicient picking motion whereby great rapidity of movement may be obtained.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope'of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing as much of one end of a loom as is necessary to illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 are views of details.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The lay beam 15, which is carried by the swords 16 that are pivotally connected at 17 I with the frame 18 of the loom, carries at either end a picking box 19 which constitutes the frame of the picking motion, said box or frame being provided with lugs 20 for the passage of fastening-members whereby it is mounted on the lay beam. Extending longitudinally through the box or frame 19 is the picking rod 21, the outer end of which is threaded for the reception of a nut 22, whereby the picking spring23 which is coiled about the rod 21 may be tensioned. Mounted slidably on the picking rod and projecting upwardly through a slot 24 in the top of the box or frame 19 is the picking arm 25. The bumper 26 is likewise slidably mounted on the picking rod. 1
The box 19 has downwardly extending ears or lugs 27 intermediate the ends thereof to support the trigger 2,8 which is mounted pivotally on a pin 29, a portion of said trigger projecting within the box 19 through a slot 30, said trigger having a notch 31 to engage the picking arm when the latter is the hand wheel 34 and the crank shaft bear ing is a spur wheel 35 meshing with a spur wheel 36 mounted on the cam stud 37, which latter is supported by a bracket 38, the spur wheel 36 having twice as many teeth as the spur wheel 25 so that it will rotate once to every two rotations of the wheel 35. Associated with the spur wheel 36 is a cam 39 which is adapted to engage a trip lever 40 which is fulcrumed on a pin 41 also carried by the bracket 38. The trip lever serves to actuate the trigger 28 which is extended in the path of one arm of said trip lever, the other arm of which carries a plug 42 that constitutes a cam engaging element.
" The box or frame 19 is equipped with rollers 43, 44 over which straps 45, 46 connected with the two ends of the bumper 26 are guided, respectively, to the breast beam 47 and with an arch 48 of the loom frame with which said straps are connected.
.A spring 49 to cushion the bumper when the latter is retracted is coiled on the picking rod 21 adjacent to the inner end wall 50 of the picking box.
In the operation of the loom by the movement of the lay beam in a forward direction, the strap 46 connecting the bumper with the breast beam will be tensioned, pulling the bumper. and the picking arm against the tension of the spring 23, compressing the latter, the movement continuing until the picking arm is engaged by the trigger 28. The shuttle box is now in position to receive the shuttle which is projected from the op posite end of the loom. By the movement of the lay beam in a rearward direction, the
strap 45 connecting the bumper with the arch of the'loom frame willbe tensioned,
thereby retracting the bumper. By the next movement of the lay beam in a forward direction the trip lever is engaged by the cam 39, releasing the trigger and causing the picking arm to be projected by. the spring 23, thereby throwing the shuttle through the shed.
