COLLAPSIBLE SHEET-METAL BARREll.
.i. o all/( 71cm it may concern:
Be it known that l, (licence W". FERGUSON, a 1.. en oi? the llnited States, residing at \Vhite Plains, in the county oi? estehester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful l mproyements in (Jollapsible Sheet-Metal Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to a. sheet metal receph ale oi the barrel type-which so con- :-;t1'm ted that it may be taken to pieces after being" (?'.1ipti.ed and thus returned to the shipin a knoclodown condition. "no principal object of the invention to provide a sheet metal barrel which may be securely held in the set up position and to provide improved means for holding the heads of the barrel in a locked position when the barrel is set up.
Another object of the invention is to so connect the heads with the body portion of the barrel so that they may be easily removed when desired and quickly connected when in use. I
This invention is illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a. side elevation of the improved barrel; Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the barrel; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View through the barrel; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View through the barrel.
The body portion or walls 10 of this barrel is formed from a strip of sheet metal which has its lower. edge portion bent to form an internal flange 11 shown in Fig. 3 and forming a pocket, the object of which will be hereinafter brought out. The upper edge portion of the body portion is bent back upon itself as shown at 12, thus forrnin g a smooth edge and preventing danger of the person handling the barrel cutting his hands upon the upper edge of the barrel. The. side edges of the strip from which the body portion is made are bent to form the hooks 13 and 14: which interlock as shown in Fig. at so that the side edge portions may be releasably connected and the body portion of the barrel held in the set up position.
The lower head 15 is formed from asheet metal. disk which is stamped to provide reinforcing ribs 16 andan annular flange 15 7 Specification of-Letters lacent.
bundles which may be packed in a ireight which fits into the pocket formed by the internal flange 1 1. forn'ied from a sheet metal disk which is stamped to form srrcngtlwning ribs 18 similar to the ribs 16 and an annular l'lang'e ll). This head 17 is placed in the upper eiid of the barrel after the barrel-has been filled and rests upon the supporting t n;zues :20 which are struck from the body portion 10. The (damping tongues 21 which are also struck from the body portioi'i'lll are now bent inwardly over the flange 1t) and into engage-- ment with the head 17, thus securely clamping the head in place and holding it in tight enga emeut with the supporting tongues 20.
fWhen'it is desired to empty the barrel,
the tongues 21 are bent upi'vardly and the cover can then be removmh After the barrel has been emptied. the body portion moved to release the hooks: 1 and 14 and the body portion will then open a. sullicient amount to permit a number oi. the body portions to be placed one within the other thuspermitting car. By having the body portion formed of resilient material the bundles of body portions will not be liable to slip out of place and therefore the bundles do not have to be very tightly tied. It is of course obvious that if the hooks 13 and ll cannot be easily released while the head 15 is in head may be first removed.
lVhat is claimed is z A receptacle of the character described comprising a body portion, a lower head for said body portion, the upper edge portion place, this of said body portion being bent to providea bead, tongues struck from said body portion beneath said head, an upper head for said body portion, certain of said tongues being bent inwardly beneath said up per head and the remaining tongues beinp bent inwardly Patented May 9', 1916.
