-Chicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Truck Side Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in truck side frames, and has for its object to provide an improved side frame capable of use with the type of journal box ordinarily used in present day practice, known as the M. C. B. journal box.
. Another object of this invention is to provide an integral truck frame capable of use with such a journal box.
Still another. object of this invention is the provision of an integral side frame which. may be readily disengaged from or secured to a journal box of the type stated.
A still further object of the invention is to provide improved fastening and locking means for use in securing such side frame to such journal box.
Other objects ill be set forth and made clear in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved side frame; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a detailelevation showing one end of my side frame in engagement with the journal box and secured thereto. Fig. 4' is a side elevation of my improved bolting member. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a locking rod. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 3; and Fig. 7 is a section. along the line 7-7 of Fig. 2.

10 designates my improved truck side frame, formed preferably of a single piece and having ends 11. Projecting from each end are the arm members 12 provided with int-urned extremities 13 forming with the end three sides of a rectangle, as shown in Fig. 2. Adjacent the juncture of the arms 12 with the end 11 the latter is notched or undercut, as shown at 14. The under sides of the arms are also similarly notched or undercut at 15, adjacent the inturned extremities 13.
Apertures 16 are provided through the arms adjacent their juncture with the end 11, and a groove 17 is provided in the outer portion of said end, said apertures arid groove being in alinement, as shown in Fig.
7 Apertures 18 are provided extending through the arms 12, adjacent'their outer ends, and the tips of the inturned extremities 13 are slightly grooved, as indicated at 19 in Fig. 2. These grooves and'apertures are also in alinement for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
In Fig. 3 I have shown an M. C. B. journal box 20, of conventional design having the usual lugs 21 formed at each edge. Extending through these lugs are the apertures 21, in alinement with grooves 22 formed in the sides of the journal box. When in assembled relation, as indicated in Fig. 3, the arms 12 of the side frame are adapted to fit over the journal box, the lugs 21 of the latter being seated in notches 14 and 15 of the side frame. When in proper position the apertures 16 and grooves 17 will form with one pair of apertures 21 and one groove 22 a continuous aperture, as will be apparent from an examination of Fig. 3. Similarly, the apertures 18 and grooves 19 of the side frame will aline with the other pair of apertures 21 and groove 22 and form a partially continuous aperture. Extending between the lower apertures 16 and 18 in the side frame I have provided a 1groove 12 for a purpose to be described ater.

The base portion 28 connects the arms 26 of the bolting member. These arms are adapted to extend through the respective continuous apertures mentioned above, as shown in Fig. 3 the base of the bolting member. being seated in the groove 12. It willbe apparent that when the bolting member is in the position shown in Fig. 3, one of the arms 26 will serve as a key seated in the respective groove 22 of the journal box and the groove 17 in the end of the side frame. keying effect will also be present between the grooves at the extremities 13 of the arms 12 and the grooves 22 in the side of the journal box. Besides this keying effect of the bolting member, the latter also serves as a true bolt, since it projects through the apertures 16 and 18 of the truck frame and the apertures 21 of the journal box. The threaded extremities 27 of the bolt member A slight .nut 31 is also provided with apertures 33 extending therethrough and adapted to aline with the apertures 32 inthe nut 30. The nuts 30 and 31 are provided with respective seating flanges 30 and 31'. The aperture 32in the nut 30 is threaded, whereas the aperture 33 in the nut 31 is not necessarily threaded.
A locking rod 35shown in Fig. 5is provided at one extremity, with. the enlarged threaded portion 36, of a size adapted to threadably engage the threaded aperture 32 cf the nut 30. The opposite end 37 of the locking rod is of slightly smaller diportion 38 is located intermediate the ends of the rod 35. The aperture in the nut 31 is ofa diameter approximately equal to that of the end 37 of the rodu35.
Theopurpose of the locking rod is as follows: When the nuts 30 and 31 are screwed into the position shown in Fig. 3, and the apertures 32 and 33 are mutually al-ined, the end 27 and main portion of the locking rod may be passed through the aperture 32 in thenut 30. Upon rotation of the rod 35, the threaded end 36 thereof will engage with the threaded aperture 32 and be drawn into locking position, the end-37 of said rod entering the aperture 33 in the nut 31. It will be apparent that when the extremities 36 and 37 of the rod 35 are in the position shown in Fig. 3, unscrewing of the nuts 30 and 31 from the threaded extremities 27 of the Ll-shaped bolt 35 will be prevented. The square portion 38 of the rod 35 may be engaged by a wrench, etc., to rotate said rod as desired.
It will be seen from the above descrip- I tion and the accompanying drawings that I have provided an improved integral side frame capable of use with the conventional form of journal box, and also capable of ready. engagement and disengagement therewith. It will be furtherobserved that the journal boxes are positively locked in true alinement with the side frames by reason of the rodsserving as keys and projecting into vertical grooves in the opposite sides of the journal box and into registering grooves in adjacent portions of the side frame, consequently the journal bearings are retained in planes transverse to the side frame, so as to accurately aline with the axle journals. It will be further apparent that have provided an improved securing and locking means for use in connection therewith, although I do not wish to restrict myself to the use of said engaging and locking means with the specific form of side frame shown. Furthermore, I do not wish to be restricted to the exact form. shown in the drawings and described in the specification beyond the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is i Y 1. In a device of the class described, an integrally castside frame, the end ofsaid frame being provided with outwardly extending arms, said arms being adapted to fit over and engage a journal box, the outer extremities of said arms being inturned with their inner faces directed obliquely toward the end of the frame.
2. In a device of the class described, a side frame, the end of said frame being provided with outwardly extending arms, said arms being'adapted to fit over and engage a journal box, the outer extremities ameter, as shown in the drawin s. A square M of said arms being inturned and the inner sides of said inturned extremities being notched, the notches extending transversely to the plane of the frame.
3. In a device of the class described, a side frame, the end of said frame being provided with outwardly extending arms, said arms being adapted to fit over and engage a journal box, the outer extremities of said arms being inturned and the inner sides of said inturned extremities being notched, and the end of said frame being notched adjacent arms, the notches extending transversely to the plane of the frame whereby the box is its juncture with said JCQ constrained to movement only transverse to the plane of the frame.
4. In a device of the class described, a side frame, the end of saidside frame being provided with outwardly extending arms and the end 'of said framebeing notched adjacent its juncture with said arms, the notches extending transversely to the plane of the frame whereby the box is onstrained to movement only transverse td the plane of the frame.
5. In combination with a. journal box having engaging lugsat its edges, a truck side frame, said frame being provided with arms projecting from the end thereof, said arms being adapted to fit over said journal box and engage the lugs thereon, and keying means coacting with said journal box and said side frame to in engagement with the former.
6. In a device of the class described, a side frame, said side frame being provided with arms extending outwardly from the end thereof, said arms being provided with apertures adjacent the. end of said frame 'and' the end oflsaid frame being provided secure the latter side frame being notched and means to pass outwardly from the end thereof, the extremities of saidarms being inturned, said arms being provided with apertures adjacent their ends and said inturned extremities being provided with grooves located in alinement with said apertures.
8. In a device of the class described, a side frame provided with arms extending outwardly from the end thereof, said arms be ing inturned at their extremities and each provided with an aperture located at its juncture with the end of said frame, the latter being provided with. grooves extending between said apertures, each of said arms being further provided with an aperture extending therethrough adjacent its outer extremity, the inturned extremities of said arms being each provided with a groove in alinement with said last-named aperture.
9. In combination, with a journal box having lugs provided at its edges, said lugs being apertured and the sides of said journal box being grooved between said apertures, a side frame having arms extending outwardly from its ends, said arms being vprovided with inturned extremities and said side frame being notched adjacent the juncture of, said arms with the end of said frame and being further notched adjacent said inturned extremities, said notched portions being adapted to fit 'over and engage the lugs of said journal box, said arms being apertured to aline with the apertures in said lugs, the said end of said side frame being grooved to aline with one of the grooves of the journal box and said inturned extremi ties of the arms being grooved to aline with the other set of grooves of the journal box, and means to pass through said grooves and apertures to secure said side frame in assembled relation with the journal box.
10. In combination with having lugs provided at its edges, said lugs being apertured and the" sides of said journal box being grooved between said apertures, a side frame having arms extending outwardly from its ends, said arms being provided with inturned extremities and said adjacent the juncwith the end of said frame and being further notched adjacent said inturned extremities, said notched portions being adapted to fit over and engage the lugs of said journal box, said arms being apertured' to aline with the apertures in said lugs, the said ends of said side frame being grooved to aline with one of the grooves the journal box and said inturned extremi ties of the arms being grooved to aline with the other set of grooves of the journal box, through said grooves and apertures to secure said side frame in assembled relation with the journal box, said means comprising a U-shaped bolt.

In combination with a journal box having lugs provided at its edges, said lugs sides of said journal box being grooved between said apertures, a side frame having arms extending outwardly from its ends, said arms being provided with inturned extremities and said notched adjacent the juncture of said arms with the end of said frame and being further notched adjacent said. inturned extremities, said notched portions being adapted to fit over and engage the lugs of said journal box, said arms being apertured to aline with the apertures in said lugs, the ends of said side frame being grooved to aline with one of the grooves of the journal box and said inturned extremities of the arms being grooved to aline with the other set of grooves of the journal box,
means to pass through said grooves an apertures to secilre said side frame in assembled relation with the journal box, said means comprising a U-shaped bolt, the extremities of which are threaded and adapted to project throu b one of said side arms, means to engage said threaded extremities, and means to lock said last-named means in engaging position.
13. In a device of the class described, a side frame adapted-to be secured to a journal box integral arms on the side frame extending above and below the box, means to secure said side frame to said.means com-prising a U-shaped bolt, the extremities of said-bolt being threaded, nuts engaging said threaded extremities of the bolt. and means to lock said nuts simultaneously.
14. In a device of the class described, a
side frame adapted to be secured to a journal b0x,-means to secure said side frame to said journal box, said means comprising a U-shaped bolt, the extremities of said bolt being threaded, and nuts engaging said threaded extremities of the bolt, said nuts being cross apertured.
15. In a device of the class described, a side frame adapted to be secured to a journal box, means to secure said side frame to said journal box, said means comprising a U-shaped bolt, the extremities of said bolt being threaded, nuts engaging said threaded extremities of the bolt, saidinuts being cross apertured, and a locking. member adapted to extend through said cross apertures and between said nuts to lock the same in position.
16. In a device of the class described, a
side frame adapted to be secured to a journal box, means to secure said side frame to said journal box, said means comprising a U-shaped bolt, the extremities of said bolt being threaded, nuts engaging said threaded extremities of the bolt, s'aid nuts being cross apertured, and a locking member adapted to extend through said cross apertures and between said nuts to lock the same in position, the aperture in one set of nuts being threaded and the locking member being provided with a threaded portion adapted to engage said threaded aperture.
