JOHN JOOHUM, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,244, dated August 22, 1871.
VTo all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JooHUM, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kin and State of New York, have invented neT and useful li'nprovements in lropelling Boats or Vessels 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beingI had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in an improvement upon that class of propeller-s Which acts against air instead oi Water, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim. A
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boat in which the propeller is arranged to act upon the air according to the proposed improvement, and Fig. Fig. 2is an end elevation.
Similar letters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts.
In this case an ordinary screw-propeller Wheel, A, is arranged in an elevated position on the deck, to be turned by the motive power' in the same manner as when acting upon the Water, but, of course, to be run very much faster for obtaining the required impelling force. It is contemplated to employ any suitable arrangement of Wind-wheels instead oi' screws, as may be found best for the purpose. By preference a hood or case, B, will be placed over the Wheel to prevent lateral displacement ofthe air, a-lso to protect it and the attendant from injury. The particular location ofthe wheel or arrangement of it or the driving mechanism is not material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentrlhe arrangement of propeller A Within a fixed hood, B, and on the deck, as and i'or the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 29th day of May, 1871.
JOHN JOOHUM.
