CHARLES H. HARWOOD, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEANS FOR EXTINGUISHING GAS-LIGHTS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,239, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HAnwooD, of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of llIassachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Means otl Extinguishing Gas-Lights, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in combining with the operative mechanism of tl ie ordinary alarm-clock a combination oil devices by which a gas-cock is closed at any given time. It is used in connection with the apparatus for vulcanizing dental plates, in which gas is used as a fuel, and in which it is desirable that the process shall be stopped at a delinite time; or it may be used for other purposes requiring the same result to be accomplished. i
The drawing represents, in Figure l, an eleva tion, partially in section, of the devices used. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both iigures.
The ordinary alarm mechanism of a clock is well known, and as almost any form of it may be used for this purpose I do not deem it necessary to describe it.
To the spring-shaft A of the alarm I attach the pulley B, on which the cord O is wound. The
other end ot' the cord is attached to the lever D. This lever is placed on the handle ofthe cock E.
The alarm being set in -the usual way and the clock set in motion, when the time designated by the alarm arrives the shaft A revolves and the cord is `w ound on the pulley B, closing the gas-cock E.
.When the alarm is wound up the cock is opened and the gas is burned until the time set to eX- tin guish it. v
I am aware that a number of devices which have been patented at different times are designed for this purpose 5 but in all these the gascoek is required to be loosely fitted, so as to turn very easy 011 account ot' the indirect manner in which the power is applied to turn it, and leakage of gas ensues from this cause.
In this arrangement the power is applied directl y, the gas-cock is closed slowly, and the cock is fitted gas-tight, and the certainty and si1np1icity with which it is operated and connected make it of value over the devices heretotbre used for this purpose.
The clock and the gas-cock may be placed in different places, being properly connected, and a number of gas-cocks may be operated by the same clock.
An alarm is given when the gas is shut oft',
fact.
I claim as n y invention- The combination of the cock E, lever D, and cord G with the pulley B when attached to the alarm-shaft of the clock, substantially as set Jforth.
