Y TOOL.
Application filed September 24, 1915.
Z 1o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. DUFFY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specilication.
'Ihis invention relates to a tool or implement comprising as one of its elements a handle which is not formed integrally with the tool head, and is particularly concerned with the construction of the tool head and the handle, and the means for connecting the same.
In the present invention I have sought to devise a construction of tool which is strong, simple, and inexpensive, and the head or working part of which can be formed by compression rather than by punching and forging, which latter method is more expensive and less satisfactory.
The invention consists also in other features of construction and combinations of parts, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tool on a reduced scale; Fig. 3 is a longii tudinal section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. lis a detail, enlarged, of the side of the tool head, illustrating` the manner in which the handle and head portions are interlocked; and Fig. 5 is' a fragmentary side elevation of one of the plates which engages with the tool head.
The present invention is especially applicable to two-part tools which embody a handle portion of wood or other suitable material, such as is designated on the drawing by the numeral 6, and a head portion which I have represented by way of illustration as a hatchet blade 7. The sides of the tool head in the plane of its juncture with the handle are recessed as at 8 forming opposite walls 9, from each of which walls a lug or button 10 projects into the recess 8. As appears best in Fig. 2, a neck 11 is thus provided between the recesses 8 of the tool head, which, in the case of a hammer or hatchet serve as' a connecting portion between the claw end 12 and the working end 13. The edge of the neck which adjoins the end of the handle is formed with a tongue 14, best shown in Fig. 4;.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, IFI@ Serial No. 52,385.
The handle is joined to the head of the tool through the instrumentality of a pair of plates 15, arranged to be secured upon opposite sides of the handle with the ends 16 thereof projecting beyond the end of the handle. As appears best in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the ends 16 of the plates 15 are configured to lie with a snug it within the recesses of the tool head, being formed with indentations 17 complementary to the lugs or buttons 10. Suitable means for securing the plates to the handle and to the tool head are shown, rivets 18 and screws 19 being suggested for this purpose, such as are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
It is manifest that, when assembled in the manner described, the tool, in its entirety, presents a rigid and strong construction, such as is desirable in implements of this character. 'Ihe lugs or buttons which engage within the indentations 17 serve effectually to prevent relative play or loose movement between the handle and the head of the too-l. rIhe plates secured upon opposite sides of the handle and within the recesses of the tool head constitute in eifect a yoke which engages with the neck portion 11, as well as the wall 9 of the recesses, and with the lugs or buttons as well, thereby interlocking the parts against relative movement in any direction. whatsoever.
In the construction of the present tool head, it is manifest that I have dispensed with the usual eye into which the end of the handle is customarily inserted. In ordinary practice, this eye is formed by a punching operation, the tool head being forged into shape by a succession of blows from the hammer or drop press. No such operations. however, are required in the production of the present tool head, as only the simple process of compression is employed, which results in the formation of a more satisfactory -and reliable tool.
I claim:
1. In a tool, the combination of a head provided with recesses upon opposite sides thereof, a lug extending within each of said recesses, a handle for the tool head, and connecting platesbetweenhsaid handle and head secured upon opposite sides of the handle and extended within said recesses, the connecting plates being formed with indentations complementary to said lugs and within Which said lugs may lie to interlock the handle and tool head, substantially as described.
2. In a tool, the combination of a head provided with external transverse recesses upon opposite sides thereof, said recesses being` of diminished Width at a desired point intermediate their ends, and a handle provided vvith a bifurcated end, the members of Which are diminished in Width at a point to conform in external edge configuration to the internal edge configuration of the recesses in which they are entered, substantially as described.
3. Ina tool, the combination of a head provided With external transverse recesses upon opposite sides thereof, having their opposing or facing edges of irregular outline, and a handle provided with a bifureated end, havingthe external edges of its opposing` members of irregular outline to conform in external edge configuration to the internal edge configuration of the recesses in which they are entered b v a side- Wise direct movement toward each other, substantially as described.
