GATE-OPERATING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 25, 1914. Serial No. 858,490.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvn Gunnnnson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bailey, in the county of Cherry, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Operating Means; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a gate.
An object of the invention is to construct a device of this character so that the same may be readily operated to either open or close by a person in a vehicle and it is provided with means within reach of the said person to operate the same so that the necessity of the person alighting from the vehicle will be obviated.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for automatically locking the gate in its opened position, which means, when actuated manually releases the gate from its locked position and at the same time returns the said gate to its initial or closed position.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and subsequently claimed.
Referring to the drawing :Figure 1 is a plan view of my device. .Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, showing the gate in its opened position. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4c is a fragmental perspective View of the means for automatically locking the gate in its opened position. Fig. 5 is a fragmental detail of the means for locking the gate in its closed position. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the gate, showing the gate swinging arms.
Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views, my device c0mprises a gate 1 which is hingedly connected to a vertically extending post 2. Slidably mounted on this gate 1 is a locking bolt 3 which cooperates with gravity actuated pawls 4 on a second post 5 to lock the gate in its closed position. Connected to this look ing bolt 3 is a bell crank lever 6 which is pivoted to the gate, as at 7, and is normally pressed by a coil spring 8 to maintain the point and on the upper end thereof is a U- shaped member 11 which lies in a horizontal plane and has two outwardly extending legs 12 and 13. On the end of each of these legs is a pulley 1 1 and a guide member 15 extending in a vertical plane.
Located at spaced points to the sides of the gate 1 are posts 16, 17', 18 and 19. On each of the posts 17 and 18 is pivotally supported a catch 20 which is adapted to engage the upper rail of the gate. 1 to maintain the same in its opened position when the same has been swung to that position, the downward movement of the said latch being limit ed by a projection 21. Slidably connected to the latch 20 is one end of a bell-crank lever 22 which is pivoted to the said post, as at 23, and has an eye 2a on the upper end thereof. Each of the posts 17 and 19 is provided with. a guide member 25 in which is rotatably mounted a pulley 26.
'In order that the gate may be readily opened by a person in the vehicle as the vehicle approachesthe gate, 1 have provided the following mechanism: A flexible mem-. ber of chain, cord or the like 27 is secured to the post 19 and extends around the pulley 26 thereon and thence through the eye 24 on the bell-crank lever 22. This flexible member then passes over the pulley on the arm 14: of the U-shaped member 11 and is guided by the member 15 on the arm 13. The flexible member then continues around this pulley 1 1 and is attached to the upper edge of the bell-crank lever 6. lnterposed between the point of attachment of this flexible member and the point where it passes" over the pulley 26 on the post 19 is I slidably mounted a ring 28 having a pulley 28 thereon. When this ring 28 is grasped by the operator and pulled, the flexible member 27 is pulled through the pulley 26, and because of the fact that the post 18 is located in theplane of the post 2 and the post 19 is located behind the said plane and the post 2, the slide moves about its pivot. This flexible member 27 rocks the bell crank lever 6 about its pivot and withdraws the locking bolt 3 from beneath the pawls 4:

against the tension of the spring 8 and subsequent motion of the said flexible member Then the upper rail of the said gate 1 engages the catch 20 on the post 17 the said catch automatically locks the gate. A similar flexible member 29 is arranged through the pulley on the post 17 and through the eye of the lever 22 on the post 16 and thence attached to the gate in a manner similar to that in which the member 27 is attached. After the vehicle has passed through the gate and it is desired to close the gate, the operator grasps the ring on the member 29 and pulls the same, which operates the lever 22 on the post 17 about its pivot and lifts the latch 20 from engagement with the gate. Further movement of the member 29 causes the gate to swing about its pivot and When the bolt 3 engages between'the pawl 4 on the post 5 the movement of the gate is arrested and the gate is subsequently held in its locked position. Of course should the vehicle approach from the opposite direction, the operation of the device will be practicallythe same except that the member 29 Will become the member for opening the gate and the gate will swing about its pivot to engage the latch on the post 19; otherwise the operation is identical.
From the foregoing description it may be readily seen that I have provided a gate Which may be readily opened and closed by a person Within a vehicle Without necessitating the person leaving the vehicle. I have further provided means for locking the gate in its opened position and I have still further provided means for unlocking the gate and swinging the same to its closed position.
' \Vhile I have described and illustrated a particular embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment for it is obvious that numerous changes may be made within the scope of the invention as defined by the claim.
What is claimed is In a device of the class described, a post, a gate pivotally supported on said post. a latch bolt slidably mounted on said gate, a spring pressed lever connected to said bolt and pivoted on said gate, a U-shaped member mounted on the gate adjacent its pivotal point and having pulleys on the ends of legs thereof, vertically extending guards on the ends of said legs, flexible members secured to said lever and passing over the pulleys and guards, posts supported in spaced relation to the first mentioned post, the said posts and the first mentioned post being in the same plane, bell-crank levers pivoted adjacent the upper end of the last mentioned posts, latches on the said posts, the said levers being engaged with the latches, the said flexible members being secured to the said bell-crank levers and means to operate the flexible members to release the said latches and swing the gate.
