To'all whom it may concern: I .Be it known that we, JACOB O. CAMPBELL,-
State of Pennsylvania, and PAULi CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Anita, inthe" county of Jefferson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grease and Oil Guns, of which the following is a specification. 1 This invention relates to apparatus especially intended for installing heavy grease in mine cars, but may be employed for other purposes, and the object of our invention is to provide an apparatus of this kind in .which the grease may-be readily and positively withdrawn from a reservoir and posir 1 tively discharged through va nozzle'or other such device.
i In carryingoutour invention we provide apump, comprising'a pump barrel having a I tapered delivery end to which the nozzle is applied, and within'the barrel we mount a rodcarrying two pistons of difierent diamv eters, onejof which fits closely the body or outer part of the barrel and the other of which is adapted to fit closely a portion oflthe taperedpart of the barrel. A checkvalve ..;qr,'as' we 'call it vacuum valve, is
mounted between the nozzle and the pistons and is adapted to open during delivery and to close during the backward movement of the pistons- A reservoir containing the ftt perspective ;v1eW
grease is connected with the barrel and a valve. is mounted in this connection which opens during the backward movement of the pistons'but closes when the pistons move forwardly toward the delivery end of the,
pump. a

hasv a tapered front portion a which is v preferably made separately and attached to the body of the barrel by a' suitable joint'a A nozzle Bis attached to the outer end of the tapered portion a and may be of anysuitable kind. Within the tapered portion a -'of the pump barrel is a checkvalve or vacuum valve'C and this is preferably car- I ried by a frustum-shaped frame 0 mounted in and fixed to the taperedpart a.
The reservoir D is preferably of the kind shown and connects with the pump barrel through a valve box E which is firmly ati tached to the reservoir and to the pump barrel and has a wide opening 0 through 'which the grease or heavy oil passes from the reservoir, and it has another openinge which establishes communication between the valve 'box and the pump barrel. The valve F comprises apart f adapted to close the opening 6 and slotted' wings f through which extends the supporting and guiding rod G. The valve is free to move toward and from the opening 0 during the operation of the pump. The piston rod H is provided with a handle h and extends through the cap a into the barrel. It carries a piston P adapted to reciprocate in the body. of the I barrel, and it is connected by means of a 85, rod h with another piston P of smaller diameter and adapted to enter the tapered portiona of'the barrel. Preferably the pistons are of the kind shown in Figs; 4
and 5. The piston 1? comprises. a disk p 99 f. The piston P comprises a disk gattached to the end of the rod 71/ and a covering 9 of flexible material-heldin place by a washer g I 1 I, Fig. lshows the apparatus in the condi for'ced inward to their full extent.- At this,
time the valvelB is'opened. If, now, the
istons are movedrearward thecheck' valve I I avacuum .orfparti lvacuum will. form between thepistons and said yacuum valve.v The grease or'oil will 'flow past the (valve F into the pump barrel, enter I the v space between the two pistons and-also pass into. thetapered,
a portion of. thev pump barrel inirear of the 1.0
. valve 0. When the i'stons have been drawn I rearward to the desired extent, their movei '30 piston rod-and pistons thereon of different p the piston P is forced the pistons.
"rel I the smaller of which is charge opening,
- that portion of the barrel having, the larger h w diameter, a. valve interposed between the the passage of ward the ment reversed. When this occurs the valve Fv is closed and the grease in front of past the valve G into the front part X of the barrel and thence outward through the nozzle B. At the sametime the grease between the pistons P, Pis moved forward by the piston P. When the pistons. are moved rearward again the valve C quickly closes, leaving some grease in the chamber X and during this rearward move-. ment grease passes to the front or inner side of the piston P and is afterward forced into the chamber X on the return movement of By this apparatus grease or heavy oil may be transferred from a reservoir to any suitable object or receptacle.
e claim as 0urinvention: 1. 'A grease gun, comprismg a pump bara reservoir. connected with pump barrel and the reservoir for limiting the barrel, a check valve in the smaller portion ofthe barrel located between the discharge opening thereof and the communica-' tion between the barrel andthe reservoir, a
diameters one of which reciprocates only in that portion of the barrelhaving the larger 7 'diameter and the-other 'of which reciprocates 35.
and smallerportionsof the grease may flow past the smaller piston to I y, opening. and into the: a smaller" portion'fof the barrel between the" 40 mrear. of thecheck-valve in both the larger barrel whereby discharge smaller piston and the-check valve.
havinga'tapered portionat one end, a
the barrel,
having portions Of'difl'erent diametersprovided with a disgrease from the reservoir to.
- 12.;A'greaseicomprisinga pump bar-b re I reservoir communicating with a valve interposed-betweenthe reservoir and f Witnesses:
the pump barrel, a piston rod operating in the barrel and having a piston making close contact; with the barrel, and another piston of smaller diameter adapted to make close contact with the tapered portion of the barrel, a nozzle for the barrel, and a valve interposed between the nozzle and the outer end of the piston rod.
3. A grease gun, comprising a pump barrel having atapered portion at one end, a check valve mounted in the tapered portion of the barrel, a reservoir communicating with the barrel, a valve interposed between the reservoir and the barrel, a piston rod,
a piston reciprocating therewith, and anthe smaller of which is provided with a dis- 0 arge opening, a reservoir connected with that portion of the barrel having the larger diameter, a valve interposed between the pump barrel and the reservoir, a check valve interposed between the discharge opening and the communication between the reservoir and the pump barrel, a piston thereon reciprocating in the larger portion of the barrel only, and another piston on said rod separated by a space from the first-mentioned piston and which reciprocates'in both the larger and smaller portions of the barrel between the check valve and the communication between the reservoir and the bar-rel.
.In testimony whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names.
