Description

A. E. BOUDREAU.
' SPARK AND THROTTLE LEVER LOCK. APPLICATlON FILED JUNE l4. $915.

H1 Af LVN names AMEDEE E. BOUJDBEAU, 0F HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT;
SPARK AND THROTTLE LEVER LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1216.
Application filed June 14, 1915. Serial No. 34,102.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMEDEE E. BOUDREAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford, State of @onnecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark and Throttle Lever Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for automobiles, and particularly to locking devices to protect the automobiles from theft.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and novel device for locking the throttle and spark levers in inoperative position.
Another object is to provide a simple locking device which automatically will engage and hold the spark and throttle levers when they are thrown over to inoperative position.
Other objects and advantages will be apparentfrom the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure l is a plan view of the segment and levers of an automobile showing the improved lock with the levers in locked position, Fig.2 is a horizontal sectional View through the lock, Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional view through the locking device showing the position of the parts when the lock is in operative position, Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the locking members.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the segment, 11 the spark lever and 12 the throttle lever. On one end of the segment is a casing 13 in one end portion of which is arranged a lock including the bolt 15, the same being actuated by a key inserted in the key-hole opening 16.
Pivotally mounted in the casing adjacent the end of the segment are two curved memtoward the lock.
bers 17 provided at corresponding ends with laterally directed and beveled foot pieces 18, extending through the sides of the easing. The other ends of each member are reduced longitudinally and normally abut one against the other at a point adjacent the bolt 15, they being urged into such position by a spring 19 disposed between the members at the other sides of the pivots. Pivotally connected to the free end of the bolt 15 is a link 20, the free end of which is formed with a double beveled lug 21 adapted to engage between the reduced ends of the members 17 in position to spread the said reduced ends when the link is drawn Each of the levers 11 and 12 is provided with the usual lip 22 which embraces one edge of the segment. Each of the levers 11 and 12 is formed with a socket at a point between the lip and the body of the lever, as shown at 23.
When the levers are thrown around to the end of the segment the beveled foot 18 of each ofthe members 17 will be engaged by the edge faces of the levers and pushed into the casing of the lock against the tension of the springs 19, and when the levers have passed the feet, the springs return them to normal position so that they engage in the sockets 23 of the levers. The levers are thus held against movement toward the other end of the segment by an unauthorized person, thus effectively insuring that the car will not be stolen.
To release the levers it is necessary to operate the look by means of a key so as to withdraw the bolt within the lock casing. This movement of the bolt causes the double beveled lug 21 to spread the curved ends of the members 17 and thus rock them on their pivots and move the feet into the casing.
What is claimed is:
The combination with the segment, throttle and spark levers of an automobile, of a pair of pivoted spring-pressed members mounted in one end of the segment, each of said members having a beveled foot projecting through one edge of the segment in position to be engaged and moved by the said lever, each of the lovers having a recess for the reception of one of the feet, a link In testimony whereof, I aflix my signahaving a double beveled lug for spreading ture, in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
engagement With the pivoted members to AMEDEE E. BOUDREAU. move them on their pivots and withdraw the lVitnesses:
5 feet into the segment and a lock including JAMES F. GlLLIGAN,
a bolt connected with said link. ALEXANDER J. BOUDREAU.
