To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RINDA RAMEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logan in. the county of Logan and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sad irons, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of a sad iron which has associated therewith an acetylene gas generator for creating aheating agent for heating the iron during the use of the same.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a sad ironas specified which is hollow and divided into a plurality of compartments, one of which is provided for the reception of the burners of the gas generator and another compartment provided for retaining hot or heated water for increasing the heat retaining property of the iron.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a novel form of supporting box or bracket for attachment to the iron for supporting the acetylene gas generator.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the sev-' eral views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved iron showing parts thereof in section, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the iron showing a part of the handle broken away, Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the acetylene gas generator, and Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section through the gas generator.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the ironing body of the sad iron proper which has a handle 2 secured to the upper surface thereof. The handle 2 comprises a metallic substantially inverted U-shaped arm 3, which has its legs secured in any suitable manner to the top of the iron body 1 and which has a wooden sleeve or collar 4c mounted thereon. The iron body 1 is divided into two compartments 5 and 6, one of which is positioned above the other as is clearly shown by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The iron body 1, which is hollow, is divided into the compartments 5 and 6 by a partition 7, which is constructed of copper or other non-corrosive material and which is secured in any suitable manner such as by the upturning of its edges and securing them to the sides of the iron body by rivets, as is shown at 8 in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The iron body 1 is provided with an opening (not shown) formed in one side thereof which communicates with the compartment 6 and which is normally closed by a closing cap 9. The opening (not shown) which is normally closed by the cap 9 is provided for filling the compartment 6 with hot water for increasing the heat retaining property of the iron.
The iron body 1 is substantially U-shaped as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and a rear end of a vertical wall thereof is provided with a plurality of openings 10 extending transversely therethrough, which openings communicate with the interior of the compartment 5 and are provided for receiving tubes 11, which have their inner ends perforated as is shown at 12, for forming burners. The top of the iron body 1 is provided with an opening 13 which is di rectly above the inner perforated ends 12 of the tubes 11. The opening 13 is normally held closed by sliding doors 14:, which are slidably guided by. guideways 15 and 16. The guideways 15 and 16 are secured to the upper surface of the top of the iron body as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 ofthe drawing. The openings 10 are larger in diameter than the tubes 11 to provide air. inlets for the compartment 5.
The doors 14 have knobs 17 secured to their upper surfaces adjacent their meeting ends, so as to facilitate the manual sliding movement of the doors.
The rear verticalwall 18, which is provided with the transversely extending openings 10, has a supporting box 20 secured thereto in any suitable manner such as by rivets 21. The box 20 is substantially rectangular in shape and has its outer side 22 hingedly connected to the base 23 as is shown at 24. The wall or side 22 has pins 25 projecting from the ends thereof which are received by openings (not shown) that are formed in springs 26. The springs 26 are secured to the ends 27 of the box 20 and these form catches or latches for holding the side 22 in a vertical position.
The box 20 is provided for retaining an acetylene gas generator 30. The acetylene gas generator 30 which is mounted in the box 22 is substantially oval shaped in'cross section and formed of separate sections 31 and The section 31 is divided into a water retaining compartment 32 which has an opening 33 communicating therewith to provide for the insertion or the pouring of water into the compartment 32. The opening 33 is normally held closed by a cap or closure. 34. The section 31 is also provided with a gas retaining chamber 35, which is positioned beneath the water retaining chamber 32 and has a felt, pad or other suitable filtering agent placed therein asis shown at 36 in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The compartment 35 has the tubes 11 communicating therewith adjacent the upper side thereof. The tubes 11 are secured to one vertical wall of the compartment 35 and they are supported thereby and provided for feeding gas from the compartment 35 into the perforated burner ends12 of, the tubes. The bottom 37 of the compartment 35 is perforated as shown at 38, and the bottom may also be removable if it is so desired, so as to permit of the insertion of the felt into the compartment, or if it is desired to have the bottom permanent, any suitable opening, (not shown) may be provided in the side of the compartment for permitting the insertion of the filtering agent therein.
The section 32 of the ator 30 is provided for is indicated at acetylene gas generretaining carbid as 39 in the drawing. The section 32 has its upper end provided with an annular recess 40, which receives a rubber or other resilient washer 41, and the washer 41 is provided for fitting into anannular depression 43 which is formed in the vertical side walls of the section 31 of the acetylene gas generator 30 for securely connecting the two sections 31 and 32 in fluid tight engagement with each other.
The partition 44 which divides the section 31 into a plurality of vertically extending tubes 45,
which tubes project through the base 37 into i the section 32. The tubes 45 have wires or rods 46 slidably seated therein for controlling the passage of water therethrough,
, from the compartment 32 into the interior of the section 32, for moistening the carbid 39 for generating gas which passes upwardly through the openings 38 into the compartment 35.- The rods 46 haveheads 47 formed upon their lower ends which control the outlets of the tubes 45. 1
When it is desired to use the iron for whereby the compartments 32 and 35 supports heating purposes, the cap 9 is removed and the compartment 6 is filled with hot water. After the compartment 6 has been filled with hot water, and the lamp or acetylene generator 30 properly charged with water and carbid, the rods or wires 46 are operated for permitting water to fall upon the carbid for the generation of the acetylene gas, which forms in the compartment 35 and passes outwardly through the tubes 11. The gas passing out of the tubes 11 through the perforated ends 12 is ignited, by any suitable igniting agent, through the opening 13, through which access is gained to the perforated ends 12 of the tubes by the sliding outwardly of the doors 14. After the gas projecting from the burners or the perforated ends 12 of the tubes 11 has been ignited, the doors 14 are partially closed and. the iron is ready for use after it has become properly heated.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings theadvantages of construction and of the method of operation of the improved sad iron will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains and, while in the foregoing description, the principle of the operation of this invention has been described together with various features of construction, it is to be understood that certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be altered to suit practical conditions provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
That is claimed is 1. The combination with a hollow sad iron body, of a box secured to one vertical wall of said iron body, an'acetylene gas generator mounted within said box, a plurality of tubes extending from said generator and into said hollow iron body, said iron body being provided with an opening in alinement with the inner ends of said tubes access may be gained to the tubes.
2. The combination with a hollow sad iron body, of a supporting box secured to one side of said hollow iron body, an acetylene gas generator detachably mounted within said box, a plurality of tubes communicating with said generator and extending into said iron body, said tubes having their inher ends perforated, an opening formed in the top of said iron body and in alinement with the perforated ends of said tubes, slidable doors for normally closing said opening and for permitting access to said perforated ends for igniting the gas escaping therefrom for heating said iron.
3. In a sad iron structure, divided into a plurality of compartments, one ofsaid compartments being provided for retaining a heated liquid, said iron body a hollow body being provided with a plurality of openings,
communicating with the other of said compartments, an acetylene gas generator, tubes communicating with said generator and extending through said openings into said hollow iron body, said tubes having their inner ends perforated for forming burners for the burning of said gas.
4:. In a sad iron structure, a hollow iron body, a transversely extending partition dividing said hollow iron body into a pair of compartments arranged one above the other, the lowermost of said compartments being provided for retaining a heated liquid, the rear wall of said iron body being provided with a plurality of transversely extending openings which communicate with the uppermost of said compartments, a box sup ported by the perforated side of said iron and provided for supporting a combustible gas generating device, tubes extending through said openingsinto said uppermost compartment for carrying the combustible gas thereinto for heating said iron body.
