To all whom t may concern: i

Be it known that l, GEORGE W. PATTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Dental Anvils, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to dental anvils and has for its object to provide an anvil for the use of dentists, jewelers or others who may need to employ an anvil in connection with small light work.

ln carrying out the objects of my invention l. provide such an anvil having suiiicient resiliency and capable of use upon a desk or polished surface without injury to the same.

is illustrated, a base 10 is provided having a circular socket 11 preferably formed with a threaded inner annular surface 12. Threaded into the socket 11 is a pipe 13 of a suitable height. The diameter of the socket 11 and pipe 13 may be varied as desired. and in practice will be from two to 'three and one-half inches. The interior of the tubular member or .pipe 13 is partially filled with resilient material 1li, as sawdust. l have discovered by experiment that. good clean sawdust is peculiarly eective for the purpose, as it will not become unduly compacted, is light and as a body possesses considerable degree 'of resiliency.

Upon the body of sawdust 14 is set a hardened steel anvil block 15, preferably slightly rounded upon its upper surface and particularly at the edges, as indicated at 16. A facing 17 of felt or similar material may be applied to the bottom of base 10, which will permit the anvil to be set upon a pollished surface without possibility of marring the same.

In use the hammering of any material is done upon the steel anvil block 15 and @epica of this patent may be the jar of the blow is absorbed in the resilient packing 111. When so used but little noise results, and no jarring of furniture or table. At the same time the anvil face is peculiarly available for use in hammering small objects or objects held with pincers.

The anvilblock 15 has one of its ends formed with a plane surface, and as the block is removably positioned in the cylinder 13 either the rounded end 16 or the plane surfaced end 17 may be employed for the hammering surface. Where forms are used, as in certain kinds of detail work, the plane surface would preferably be used, upon which the forms or dies will be rested, the hammering of the material being effected through said forms or dies. lhile the pipe 13 is shown as threaded into the socket 11, it is practicable to cast the pipe and base in one integral member either as a single casting or to cast the base upon a piece of previously fabricated die pipe.

1. A detail anvil comprising a base, a tubular member secured to the base forming a chamber, a body of sawdust partially filling said chamber', and an anvil block eX- tending within the chamber and resting upon the body of sawdust.

2. dental anvil comprising a base having a flat surface on one side and a cylindrical threaded socket on the other, a pipe threaded into said socket forming a vertical cylindrical chamber, a body of resilient material consisting of sawdust partially filling said'chamber, and a hardened steel anvil block extending into the chamber and resting upon said body of sawdust.

3. A dental anvil comprising a circular base, a pipe secured centrally upon said base and forming a vertical cylindrical chamber, a body of granularl resilient material partially filling said chamber, and a hardened steel anvil block removably positioned in the chamber and resting upon said body of resilient material.
