SIGNAL DEVICE FOR SUBMARINE BOATS.
Application filed March 20, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRICK E. Noun, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at 262 West One Hundred and Forty-fourth street, New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signal Devices for Submarine Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to signal devices for submarine boats, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a buoy which is normally held within a casing immediately below the upper deck of the submarine boat, and which can be released at any moment to propel itself to the surface of the water for displaying a red light in the night or for sounding an alarm, said buoy being provided with means whereby a telephone may be connected to the buoy to communicate to the submarine vessel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple device for indicating the location of a submarine boat in case of accident or when it is desired to communicate with persons on the surface of the water without changing the position of the submarine boat.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a signaling apparatus made in accordance with this invention and showing portions in section, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, disconnected from the casing for containing the motor and working mechanism, Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the apparatus, Fig. 4 is a detail view of the rod for operating the cover to the casing, Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the buoy, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view and elevation of the rod for operating the cover to the casing.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a portion of the upper deck of a submarine boat provided with an opening therein in which is located a casing for containing the buoy and operating mechanism.

is rigidly connected to the squared upper end of a hollow cylindrical rod 7* which is provided with a handle 8 to swing said cover I and to rest upon the extended portion of the flange 3 by means of a bolt T that is provided with a head 8 on one end thereof and extends through the hollow cylindrical casing T and receives a nut 9 on the opposite end thereof whenever it is desired to have the buoy contained within thecasing propelled to the surface of the water.
The buoy comprises the upper section 9 and the lower section 10. lhese two members are connected together by means of an intermediate diaphragm 11 and bolts 12 which extend through outwardly turned flanges on said members. Connected to the lower portion of the buoy is a diaphragm 13 which covers the lower portion of the buoy and is connected to the outturned flanges by means of bolts 1 1 which extend through a supporting member 15 for a motor 16. Surrounding the motor are rudders 17 and connected to a swivel 18 at the bottom of the motor support is a cable 19 which is wound upon a drum 20 provided with a crank handle 21 for returning the buoy to the casing after it has been used. A shaft 22 extends vertically through the buoy and through the diaphragms 13 and 11, said shaft carrying upon its upper end a propeller wheel 23.
The winding mechanism is mounted in an air tight casing 24-. \Vinding drums 25 and 26 in the casing 2 1 carry insulated electric wires 27 which run to binding posts 28 at the sides of the buoy. Connections 29 lead to an electric light vided with a red colored bulb. Switches 31 may be provided for controlling the light. Guide rollers 32 carried by arms 33 run in guide ways 34: to hold the buoy in an upright position and to start it vertically when the cover 5 is opened.
The operating rod 7 for the cover 5 is mounted in a tubular cover or casing 7 Sockets 35 for the connection of telephones may be provided in the upper portion of the buoy.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that when the door 5 is swung upon its pivotal point to open the same and the motor 16 is started the propeller wheel 23 will rotate and carry the buoy up to the surface of the water and at the same time the electric light bulb 30 may be lighted and other 30 which may be pro-' means for attracting attention may be provided.

lVhat is claimed is 1. A submarine signaling device compris ing a casing secured underneath the deck of a submarine boat, an outwardly extending flange formed on the upper and lower ends of said casing, a cover secured to the upper flange of said casing, guide Ways secured to the upper end of said casing and bent downwardly therein, a self propelled buoy provided with guide rollers adapted to slide in said guide ways, means for controlling said self propelled buoy within said housing, and means for opening and closing the cover.
2. A submarine signal device comprising a casing secured underneath the deck of a submarine boat, a cover secured to said cas ing, means for operating said cover, guide ways formed in said casing, a buoy consisting of an upper and lower section slidably mounted in said guide ways, a diaphragm connecting said sections together, a supporting member connected to the lower section by means of a second diaphragm, rudders connected to said supporting member, means mounted in said supporting member for propelling the buoy, and means for controlling said buoy.
