To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MIKLOS CHUPKA, subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Johnstown, inv the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Boats and Launching-Davits Therefor, of which the following is a specification. 7 v
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in life; boats and launching davits therefor.
The primary object of this invention is to provide closable life boats of water-tight construction with accommodating mounting brackets upon the gunwale portions of a vessel, the vessel being provided with a guard rail but allowing free launching of the boats.
A still further object is to provide railings along the gunwale portions of the deck of a vessel for forming open-sided inclosures adapted for the reception of life-boats mounted upon suitable brackets therein, means being provided to allow the sailors to enter the inclosure and means also being provided for each life-boat whereby the same may be elevated above the level of the deck and then projected outwardly overthe Water and lowered onto the surface of the same when the life-boats are filled with passengers.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the forward portion of a vessel provided with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side View of the life-boat hoisting device. Fig. 4; is a front elevation of the hoisting device partly shown in section. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the lifeboats. Fig. 6 is a front plan view thereof,
and Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Referring more in detail to the drawings the vessel 10 is herein illustrated having the deck 11 thereof provided with a marginal railing l2 spaced off into a plurality of partial 'inclosures 13 upon the opposite gunwale portions of the deck. These inclosures 13 have one open or outer side 14.- for allowing the life-boats 15 which are normally positioned within the inclosures' 13 to be laterally swung over the side of the vesselfor launching into the water. Each inclosure has the railing thereof provided with agate 16 for allowing the sailors to enter the inclosure without climbing over the railing. Each inclosure is provided with opposite brackets 17 which are of substantially triangular form in side elevation and have inwardly and upwardly inclined flanges 18 adapted to be received within the upwardly inclined end sockets 19 formed in the outer wall of the life-boat and whereby the life-boats are mounted horizontally positioned upon the deck of the vessel within the said inclosure.
A hoisting device is provided upon the deck for each of the life-boats and consists of a'n upright post 20 revolubly. mounted upon a base 21 and having anti-friction ball-bearings 22 positioned between the posts and base. A shaft 23 is transversely journaled through the top of the post and intersects a rectangular opening 2 extending through the said post and at rightangles'to the said shaft. Rollers 25 are also journaled in the opening 24 at the top and bottom of the opening 24 and a supporting beam 26 is slidably mounted upon the rollers 25 and through the opening 24, the said beam being provided with a central longitw dinal slot 27 adapted for the reception of the shaft 23 and a toothed wheel 28 carried by the said shaft, which wheel is in constant mesh with a rack 29 at the top of the slot 27 At the side of the post normally facing the deck, the shaft 23' has a fixed sprocket wheel 30 over which runs a sprocket chain 81-which chain also passes over asimilar sprocket wheel 82 positioned near the bottom of the post and adapted to be operated by a turn crank 83. A pawl 34 is pivotally secured to the post 20 which is adapted for ratcheting engagement with a pinion 35. It will be seen by this description, that by turning the crank 33, the beam 26 may be longitudinally shifted through the post opening 24.
The life-boats 15 are each provided with cables 36 rigidly secured thereto for posi- I 43fand' the cable 38 has one end thereof setioning a ring 37 centrally of the top of the boat and whereby the boat may be elevated by means of the hoisting device upon the deck of the vessel; .A, cable 38 is provided at one end with a=hook 39 adapted to engage thelife-boat ring 37 while said cable passes V overthe pulley 40 which is mounted uponone end of the beam, 26 by means of abracket 41 A Winding drum 42- is mounted upon the postQO, being operable by a turn crank cured to and wound upon the said drum. The drum 42 hasa pinion 44 secured thereto while a pawl, 45 carried by the post is adapted to'engage the teeth ofthis pinion.

A serviceable arrangement of safely-constructed life-boats is thus provided upon the deck of the vessel arranged completely guarded at the opposite sides of the deck while serviceable launching means are provided for each boat.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be the preferred embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes maybe made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the claim.
What I claim as new is A device of the class described comprising in combination with the'deck of a vessel, a railing arranged adjacent the gunwale portion thereof and formed into spaced inclosures having open outer sides, and with hinged sections at their inner sides, life-boat mounting brackets substantially triangular in side elevation and having upwardly and inwardly projecting flanges and oppositely mounted upon'the railing at the ends of said incl'osure for supporting a life boat.
