CROUSQR, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Mair hattan. in the county and State of New York. have invented a new and Improved Fountain-Pen-Filler Control. of which the following is a full. clear. and exact description.
My invention relates to fountain pens provided with an elastic ink reservoir. and has reference more particularly to the means for varying the volume of the elastic reservoir by compressing the same.
The obje t of the invention is to provide a simple. convenient and inexpensive fountain-pen tiller control which. when accidentally displaced on the pen. will not cause a variation in the volume of the elastic rese1' voirand. consequently, eject a part of the ink thereof through he pen.
With the above and other objects in view. the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds. the invention consists in the novel construction. combination and arrangement of parts.- as herein fully described. illustrated and claimed.

Referring to the drawings. 4 represents the barrel of the pen which acconnnodates the elastic reservoir 5 carried by the pen holder (3 connected to the barrel 4 in any suitable way. .\u elongated plate? is located between the elastic reservoir and the interior lateral surface of the. barrel. The plate 7 has two longitudinal slits 8, preferably located in the middle part of the plate. The material of the plate between the slits is preferably depressed. as indicated at H; while the lnatcrial to each side of the slits is ra sed. as; indicated at 7. The barrel is also provided with an openmg 11 adapted to register with the depressed portion 8' in the plate 7. and through which opening the lever 9 is adapted to project. The barrel is also provided with an elongated recess 1'. on the outer lateral surface thereof adapted to accommodate the lateral portion of the lever 9- when the same is innormal position. as shown in Fig. 1.
To place the lever 9 into operative position the same is turned on its fulcrum to bring the lever 9 from a position su stantially parallel to the axis of the barrel (see Fig. 1) to a position substantially perpeir dicular to the axis of the barrel (see Fig. '2). The resiliency of the portions 7' and 8' maintain said lever automatically in either of said positions. due to the contact of the llat portions of the shoulders of the lever 9 with the plate 7 under the action of the resilient portions of said plate.
By compressing the lever 9 into the barrel the volume of the elastic reservoir 5 is realuced and. consequently. suction will be created when the lever is released and ink will be caused to flow into the reservoir under the. action of the atmospheric pressure. The end of the lever 9 is preferably 'pro vided with a head 13 facilitating the movement of the lever on its fulcrum formed by the shoulders of the plate 7. that if the lever 9 is accidentally displaced from the position shown in Fig. l to the position shown in dotted line in the same tigure. the volume of the elastic reservoir 5' will not be disturbed and. consequently. the ink within thereservoir will not e forced out through the pen holder as is the case with levers of the first class with their fulcrums intermediate the ends. By providing a T-shaped lever which is bent into the shape of a square and which is t'ulcrumed on its T shoulders at the plate. I eliminate the use It will be noted of a ,fulcrum in the barrel in the shape of a pin, "which necessitates the drilling of the lever and the barrel; thus, my pen is cheaper and of a stronger construction.
In Figs. t and 5 a modified structure of the plate is shown. In this structure the plate 7" is provided with a resilient mem ber 15 which is secured to the upper face of the plate. This resilient member has an opening 1+ through which the stem of the lever 9 is adapted to project. This resilient member 15 receives the resilient portions 7' and S of the plate. The said resilient member 15, if desired, can be placed on the under side of the plate which contacts with the elastic reservoir.
From the oregoing description, taken in connection 1th the accompanying drawings, the advantage of the construction and operation of the device shown will be readily understood by those skilled inthe art to which the invention pertains; and while I have described the principle of operation,
together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I
desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a fountain pen, a barrel, an elastic reservoir therein, a plate within the barrel engaging the reservoir. and a lever having a lateral portion engaging the plate and fulcrumed thereon with its lateral portion, said lever projecting through the barrel, said plate being resilient at the point where the lever fulcrums. said lateral portion including means for cooperating with the resilient part of the plate for maintaining the lever in an operative or in inoperative position.
2. In a fountain pen. a barrel, an elastic reservoir therein, a plate within the barrel engaging the reservoir. and a T-shaped lever engaging the plate with its shoulders and projecting with its stem through the barrel, the portions of the plate engaging the shoulders being resilient to maintain said l ver in operative or in inoperative position.
3. In a fountain pen a barrel, an elastic reservoir therein, a plate within the barrel engaging the reservoir, said plate having a pair of longitudinal slits in the middle thereof, the part of the plate between the slits being depressed while the parts of the plate at the sides of the slits are raised, and a T-shaped lever engaging with its shoulders the raised portions of the plate and projecting with its stein through the barrel, said raised and depressed portions of the plate being resilient. whereby said lever is maintained in operative or in inoperative position.
4. In a fountain pen. a barrel, an elastic reservoir therein, a plate within the barrel engaging the reservoir. said plate having a pair of parallel longitudinal slits. the ma terial of said plate between the slits being depressed and the material of the plate at the sidesof the slits being raised, and a T-shaped lever engaging with its shoulders the raised part of the plate. the stem of said lever projecting through the barrel,a portion of said stem being bent laterally, whereby the unbent portion is adapted to engage the depressed portion of the plate when said lever is placed into operative position, the depressed and raised portions of said plate beingresilient. whereby said lever is maintained in operative or in inoperative position automatically.
5. In a fountain pen, a barrel. an elastic reservoir therein. a plate within the barrel engaging the. reservoir. said plate having a pair of parallel. longitudinal slits. a partof the plate between the slits being depressed and the parts of the plate at the sides of the slits being raised, said raised and depressed parts of the plate being resilient, and a T- shaped lever engaging the raised parts of the plate witlrthe shoulders thereof under the action of the depressed portion, said shoulders forming a fulcrum 'for said lever on the plate. a portion of the stem oi the T-shaped lever being bent laterally at right angles to the shoulder of the lever. said barrel having an opening through which the stem of the lever projects. the shoulders of said lever being angular in shape, whereby the resilient part of the plate engaging the shoulder will maintain said lever in operative or in inoperative position.
