Description

D. L. CHESTERMAN.
TRUSS PAD.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 3. 1915.
Patented May 2, 1916.
INVENTOR WITNESSES DANA L. CI-IESTERMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO CHESTERMAN & STREETER, INC., A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
TRUSS-PAD.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANA L. CHESTERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Truss-Pad, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a pad for a hernial truss, the same being formed of a body member, and a pad member thereon adapted to increase or decrease the pressure at the desired place, while also possessing a greater retaining power thereat than heretofore, and serving to eliminate pressure on the pubic bone.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, as long as they are included in the scope of the claims.
Figures 1 and 2 represent perspectlve views of opposite sides of a pad embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 represent perspective views of the members of the pad in separated condition. Fig. 5 represents a. transverse section on line 0000 Fig. 2. Fig. 6 represents a similar section of a, modification.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a pad for a hernial truss, the same consisting of the back pad member or body 2, and the central pad member 3, the latter being seated partly in a depression in said body and projecting sufliciently therefrom in order toengage with the portion of the abdomen to which it is applied.
At the back portion of the member 3 is the rigid plate 4 preferably of metal, rigidly secured in position, it having centrally thereon the interiorly threaded opening 5.
On the front portion of the body 2 is the rigid plate 6, preferably metal, rigidly secured in position, it having fitted centrally therein the screw 7 which by means of the head 8 and collar 9 on opposite sides of said plate 6, is swiveled on the latter, so as to be capable of rotation without longitudinal movements. The threaded portion of said screw is adapted to be fitted in the opening 5, and engage with the threads thereof, whereby it will be seen that when the screw is rotated, sliding motions may be imparted to the central pad member 3, so as to project Specification of Letters Patent.

it out farther from the back pad member, or move it in closer to the same, it being evident that by these means said central member may be adjusted according to requirements of a rupture, so as to increase or decrease the degree of pressure on the desired place, and possess a greater retaining power at said place, while also relieving the pubic bone of the painful pressure usually created since said member of itself centralizes the pressure of the pad and serves to relieve the back member of pressure on said place, while also removing the entire pad from the pubic bone.
It will be noticed that the body 2 is formed of an annular or ring shaped cushion 12 which is imposed on the peripheral portion of saidrigid plate 6, leaving at the center of the body the depression which receives the pad member 3 as above stated.
The cushion 12 has a cover 13 of material which extends from the back of the plate 6, around the outer side of said cushion, then over the front of the same and again around the inner side thereof where it conforms to the central depression of the body above stated, and forms a lining for the peripheral wall of said depression, it being imposed on the front face of said plate, thus holding the cushion 12 in place, the portion of the cover forming said lining having the adjustable member 3 adapted to ride thereon and being guided thereby without liability to contact with said cushion 12 and disturb the same, said member 3 thus being guided in its motions on said cover which of itself is firm in its nature, while the cushion 12 preserves its soft nature and also its annular shape owing to its inclosure by said cover.
In Fig. 6 I show the central pad member 3 having its inner end connected with the plate spring 10 whose ends are movably attached to the rigid plate 6 having a threaded opening in which is fitted the screw 11 whose point is adapted to bear against the central portion of said spring so that by the rotation of the screw in one direction, said pad member 3 will be advanced to the desired extent, and when it is rotated in the opposite direction, it will be drawn in by the spring to the desired extent by which provision, said members may be adjusted according to requirements of the rupture, etc., similar to those embodied in the other figures.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hernial truss, an adjustable pad, and a stationary body therefor, the latter being formed of a rigid back plate, an annular cushion on the peripheral portion of said plate forming a depression centrally in said body, and a cover connected With said plate and extending over said cushion into said depression to. the front of said plate forming a lining for the peripheral Wall of said depression.
2. In a hernial truss, an adjustable pad, a stationary body, means on said body and pad for moving the latter, said body being formed of a rigid back, plate, an annular cushion on the peripheral portion of the front of said plate forming a depression centrally in said body which is bordered by said cushion, and a cover for said cushion extending from the outer sides of said back plate, over said cushion into said depression, and imposed on the front of said plate, said cover forming a lining for said depression with Which said pad engages and on which it rides in its adjustable motions.
