IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-ELEVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,153, dated August 15, 1871 antedated August 4, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Rnrs. O. ROBERTSON, of Barnesville, in the county of Charlotte and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Elevator; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing' and to the letters of reference marked thereon makin g a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a tobacco-elevator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring' to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is an end view of my elevator'. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section through one of the adjustable legs of the windlass-frame.

A A is intended to represent the frame-work of a barn or tobacco warehouse constructed and arranged in any suitable manner. B represents a windlass mounted upon a shaft which has its bearings in two beams, C C, connected by bars E E to forni a movable and adjustable frame for the windlass. The lower ends of the beams C C a-re mortised through for a suitable distance, and through said mortises are passed headed bolts c c, which also pass through legs D D, as shown, said legs being confined close to the beams by means of a strap, b, attached to the upper end of each leg and passing around the beam; and another strap, d, att-ached to the lower end of each beam and passing' around its corresponding leg. By means of these adjustable legs the windlassframe C E can be accommodated to any inequalities in the ground upon which it rests. It may be placed either inside or outside of the barn or warehouse. From near the upper ends of the beams C C project arms ff, in the ends of which a roller, c, has its bearings, said roller being shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. To the windlass B are attached two ropes, h h, which pass under the roller@ and up over two pulleys, k 7c, mounted on a movable frame, G. This frame may be laid on the beams of the barn or warehouse Wherever desired. To the ends of the ropes h h are attached clamps m m, made of metal in rectangular shape, one end ofeach ofsaid clamps bein g hinged, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to be readily opened and closed at will.

The ropes l). h may be connected by a chain, a, a short distance above the clamps m m, so as to prevent them from separating. The tobacco-stick I is placed in these clamps, and, with the tobacco, is hoisted by means of the windlass to the point where it is desired to suspend the same, when it is swung around so that the ends of the stick will rest upon the beams o f the barn; then the clamps are opened and released from the stick.
