This invention relates to devices employed in the distribution and consumption of illu minating elastic or other fluid mediums, and
in particular to a cock or turn-valve for the purpose of permitting or arresting the flow of gas through the same, whereby a predetermined small quantity of the elastic fluid may be allowed to pass therethrough, or the passageway may be enlarged to provide a variety of predetermined larger capacities,
and whereby the said device may become automatically locked in'either of the said plurality of open or on positions, and also held automatically locked when in a closed or 01f relation. To attain the desired end, the'invention consists in the construction, arrangement and operation of parts hereinafter set forth. In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this invention, and illustrative of one embodiment of the same, Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of an article constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 plan view, the operating key being removed.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 denotes the socket member of the gas-cock, the respective ends of which may be attached to a gas supply pipe and to a plug on a gas bracket and or other fluid container in the usual or any suitable and approved manner.. The socket member is made with the usual passageway 19 and a conical valve seat 2, at. the larger portion of which are' preferably formed an alined series of engaging devices. as circumferential recesses or notches 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 the notches 5 21F d .6 having an inclined side wall and the notches 3, 4 and 7 being radially disposed. The socket is also made. with a stop pin 8' located adjacent to the valve seat. In the other part of the socket there is ordinarily located a recess 9.
The conical portion of the. plug-valve member 10 is formed with the usualhorizontal port 18, the smaller end of the plug preferably extending up through the recess 9 and working in .a bearing at the top of the socket to which it is secured in a movable relation by any suitable means, as by a nut. A coiled spring 11 is ordinarily located in the recess 9, the-extremities of which are preferably respectively secured to the wall of the said recess and to the plug-valve. Th'e other-end of the plug terminates in an operatlngkey 12 in-which are mounted. a plurality of engaging devices, as two yieldingstop-fingers 13 and 14 preferably held in a normal outward and resilient relation, as by an intermediate spring 15, and ordinarily pivoted at or near the outer end of the operating key, as by the pintle 16.
The pressure stop-fingers are preferably made so as to register with and simultaneously respectively engage the notches 3 and '4, while the finger 14 is preferably constructed and arranged to register with and engage the notches 6 and 7 during the operation of the, device; and the finger 13 will, in use, preferably register with and engage the notch 5, all of which notches lie in the path of the stop fingers. The plug-valve is also made with a stop device, as a screw or lug 17 constructed and arranged to engage and abut the pin 8 when the device is in a closed relation, the said parts being normally held in contact by the spring 11.
In operation, the parts are normally held in a closed relation as illustrated in Fig. 1, the finger l3 being in the notch 3, and the finger 14 being in the notch 4. In order to unlock and open the cook, the stop-fingers ing of the socket until the finger 14. enters will be still more open,

By a continued forward movement of the operating key, the finger 13' will ride out of the beveled or inclined side wall of the "notch '5, and the finger 14: will enter the notch 7, at which point the cock will be locked in a full open position, and the operating key cannot be turned in either direction unless both of the stop-fingers are pressed inwardly. v In order to close the cock when in either of the said three open positions, spring stop-fingers 13 and 14 toward each other,whereupon the spring 11 the plug-valve 10in a rearward. direction until its movement is stopped by the engagement of the pin 8 with the lug 17 It will thus be seen that by the employment of .a socket member having a series of alined notches in combination with a plug-valve member having pressure fingersv which may be selectively engaged with the i said notches, a very efficient, safe and durable device is obtained. In the course of'the rearward movement of the plug-valve, the
fingers will consecutively engage with the notches, so that, if the pressure on the fingers is released, the valve will beheld in a partly open position, rearward movement of the same'being prevented (to avoid accidental turning out of the smallest flame) until the fingers are again forced inwardly, whereupon the device will become automatically locked in a closed relation.
It is obvious that the invention may be employed in connection with fluids and mediums other than the preferred one mentioned herein, the invention residing in the peculiar construction and arrangement ofparts which may be employed in connection with any medium with which the same may be found to be adapted to be used.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for ob vious modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a device of the class described, a socket member having a series of engageing devices, in combination with a plugit is merely necessary to press the.

socket member having a series of alined engaging devices, in combination with a plug-valve member having pressure fingers adapted to simultaneously engage some of the said engaging devices and to alternately engage the remainder of the same in combination with a torsion spring to rotate the plug when in an open position upon the re lease of the locking. fingers.

In a device of the class described, a socket member having a series of alined engaging devices, in combination with a plug-valve member having pressure fingers adapted to simultaneously engage some of the said engaging devices so as to be locked from either forward or rearward movement, and to alternately engagethe remainder of the same so as to prevent rearward move-- ment thereof in combination with 'a torsion spring to rotate the plug when in an open means to automatically lockthesaidfingers so that the plug will be in an open relation, and also to automatically lock the said finposition upon the release of the locking fingers so that the plug will be in a closed relation, in combination with 'a-torsion spring to rotate the plug when in an open position upon the release of the locking fingers.
6. In a device of the class described, a socket member having {a'series of alined engaging devices, in combination with a plug:
valve member having pressure fingers adapted to selectively engage-the said engaging;
devices, and with means to automatically lock the said fingers'so thatth'eplug will be in an open relation, and also-to ,stop the v and fingers in a plurality of positions'in their rearward movement and to-automatically lock the said fingers so that the plug will be in a closed relation in combin tion with a torsion spring to rotate the plug -when -1n anopen position upon the releaseof the locking fingers.
