This invention relates to devices for mag ib netizing car wheels and has for its primary '"object to provide a magnetizing device encircling the car axle, so that the magnetism "created by the passage of current will flow through one wheel to the rail and back by away of the opposite rail and wheel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a magnetizing device encircling the wheel axle having a magnetizing coil and a pair of slip rings and brushes by means pf which current may be conveyed to and away from the coil.
The invention. consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawing, my invention is shown encircling anaxle 1 that is rotaas t'ably mounted in the boxes 2 and 3, rigidly securing the wheels 4 and 5 together that travel upon the usual rails 6 and 7. Fixedly mounted upon the axle 1 are spaced disks 8 and 9 of insulating material, such as hard fiber; Wound around the axle 1 between the disks 8 and 9 is a magnetizing coil 10 of a size suiiicient to create the proper amountof magnetism with a small amount of current such as would be derived 4.5 from the usual generator that is used for illuminatingthe coaches. Encircling each disk 8 and 9 is a slip ring 11 to which is attached .the extremities of the coil 10. Bearing upon the slip rings 11 are brushes so 12 arranged in fixed position by means of the holders -13 that are in turn rigidly secured to the boxes 2 and 3. One of the brush holders "is provided with a contact screw 14 to which the feed wire 15 is connected while the remaining brush holder is also provided with a contact screw 16 to which is secured the return wire 17.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen. that the coil slip rings and disks rotate with the wheels, while the brushes and brushholders are held stationary through being secured to the boxes- This arrangement properly takes care of the centrifugal force created by the rapid rotation of the wheels.
.Themagnetism created by current traversing the coil 10 will pass from one end of the axle to one of the car wheels from whence it passes to one of the rails. From this rail the magnetic lines of force can either pass through the air to the opposite rail or through the next adjacent wheels and axle of the car. From the opposite rail, the
magnetism passes back to the axle by way of v the remaining wheel. Thus it will be seen that there is an attraction between the peripheral-surfaces of the wheels and the tread -surfaces of the rails.
In Figs. 3, t and 5 .I have shown automatic means for closing the circuit of the magnetized coil when the air brake of the same is applied. Referring to these figures it will be seen thatthe circuit breaker indicated by the, letter A is connected to the brake cylinder B and communicates with the latter at all times. This circuit closer comprises a two-part casing 18; one part of which, 19, has threaded engagement with the wall of the brake cylinder B and is further provided with a passage 20 through which communication is established between the interior of the casing and the interior of the brake cylinder. A diaphragm 21 has its marginal edge portion secured between the parts of the casing as clearly shown in Fig. 4. From this construction it will be seen that the interior of the casing is divided in two parts one part of which is in communication with the interior of the brake cylinder continuously, with the result that when air pressure enters the brake cylinder for applying the brakes the diaphragm will be deflected in a certain direction. The deflection of the diaphragm is utilized for closing the magnetized coil cir' cuit in a novel manner now to be described.
Arranged in the second part of the easing is an insulating plug 22 having centrally adjustable therein an electrocont-act 23 forum ing one terminal for the magnetizing coil circuit shown including in series a generator 24. Secured centrally to the diaphragm is the contact 25 arranged in axial alinement with the-electrocontact 23. The,
protruding portion of the electrocontact 23 is completely housed by the piping 26, and the end of said portion is slotted so as to re will be'deflected in a direction to bring the' contact 25 into engagement with the electrocontact 23 for allowing current to pass from the generator 24 through the magnetizing coil-circuit for energizing the magnetizing coil 10 for obvious reasons.
Having described my invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, in comblnation, a magnetized coll encircling a wheel axle, a source of current, an air pressure controlled means for connecting said source of current With said coil.
2. In combination, an air brake cylinder, a two part casing, a diaphragm having its marginal edge portion secured between said parts, a portion of the interior of said cas ing to one side of said diaphragm communicating with the interior of said cylinder at all times,-an insulating'plug mounted in In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.-'
