Application filed October 4, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W'ILLIE E. LAMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Green Forest, in the county of Carroll and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Hame and Trace Connector, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to hame and trace connectors, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that :character.
It is the object of the invention to provide a hame and trace connector having novel and improved details to enhance the utility and efficiency thereof, and rendering the device simple and inexpensive also.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved hame and trace connector. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the hame clip is formed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the block used in the hame clip.
In carrying out the invention, there is employed a double or U-shaped clip 1 formed from suitable sheet metal, and straddling the end of the trace or tug T, rivets or other suitable securing elements 2 being engaged through the limbs of the clip 1 and the terminal of the trace T. The outer limb or portion of the clip 1 has an outstanding loop 3 for receiving the end of the tug or other strap. The bend of the clip 1 projects from the end of the trace and embraces the straight portion of a D 4, whereby the D 4: can swing relative to the trace.
A hame clip 5 comprising a doubled plate of sheet metal, the blank of which is illustrated in Fig. 3, has its bend surrounding the outstanding staple 6 of the hame H, and the terminals of the clip 5 have lobes 7 through which a rivet or other pivot element 8 is engaged. tween the lobes 7 and the curved portion of the D 1 passes around and contacts with the roller 9 within the clip 5 to allow the D 4 and tug T to swing upwardly and downwardly with respect to the clip 5, the clip 5 enabling the tug T to vibrate sidewise easily relative to the hame H.
An elongated block 10 of metal or other suitable material is disposed snugly between the limbs of the clip 5 adjacent the bend of the said clip, and the opposite sides of the block 10 are provided adjacent the ends of the block with outstanding lugs 11 fitting in notches 12 with which the limbs of the clip 5 are provided. provided in the edges of the limbs of the clip 5 between the bend and terminals of the clip. The block 10 is located adjacent the bend of the clip 5 and confines the staple 6 within the bend, the block 10 cooperating with said bend to provide a bearing for the staple 6. That side of the block 10 remote from the bend of the clip is provided between its ends with a curved recess 13 for accommodating the D 1, and that side of the block 10 adjacent the bend of the clip 5 is provided with a similar curved recess 14: and with longitudinal grooves 15 between the ends of the block 10 and recess 14. The grooves 15 accommodate the staple 6. That side of the block 10 having the recess 18 is flat between the said recess and the ends of the block. .In some instances it might be desirable to present flat surfaces toward the bend of the clip 5 instead of the grooves 15, and in this case, the block 10 is simply reversed or turned to an angle of 180 about its longitudinal axis, so that the recess 18 faces the bend of the clip, while the recess 11 accommodates the D 1.
In assembling the parts, the D 1 can be readily applied to the clip 1 before the clip 1 is attached to the trace or tug T, and the clip 5 can be readily applied to the staple 6 before the block 10, the rivet 8 and D 4 are applied to said clip 5. When the clip 5 is applied to the staple 6, the limbs of the clip 5 are separated sufficiently, so that the block 10 can he placed within the clip 5, and the limbs of the clip 5 then forced together to clamp the block 10 therebetween, and the lugs 11 will be received by the notches 12. The D 4 and'roller or wheel 9 are then properly placed within the clip 5, and the rivet 8 is inserted and hammered or swaged to hold the limbs of the clip 5 Said notches 12 are p together. The parts may be easily and cheaply manufactured and assembled and serve to effectively connect the trace to the hame, whereby the trace can vibrate vertically and horizontally in a desirable manner. The D 4 in moving around the rivet 8 allows the trace T to move upwardly and downwardly the wheel or roller 9 permitting the D 4: to oscillate freely and the clip 5 in oscillating about the staple 6 enables the trace or tug to be swung sidewise'easily. The parts of the connector, however, are not liable to be displaced or separated accidentally.
What is claimed as new is:
In a hame and trace connector, a double sheet metal hame clip, an elongated block disposed snugly between the limbs of the clip adjacent and parallel with the bend thereof, the opposite sides of the block having outstanding lugs adjacent the ends thereof, the edges of the said limbs having notches receiving said lugs, a securing ele ment engaged to the terminal portions of the clip a roller mounted for rotation upon the securing element within the clip, and a D having its curved portion passing around said roller within the clip, those sides of the block which are adjacent and remote from the bend of the clip having curved recesses between their ends, and that side which is adjacent said bend having longitudinal grooves between the respective recess and the ends of the block.
