' R. A. PARENT.
JAR HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 18,1918.

RUFUS A. PAREN -'1, OF SOUTH TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
JAR-HOLDER.
' Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 22, 1919 Application filed July 18, 1918. Serial No. 2455540.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS A. PARENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ar-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a jar holder, and has for its object the construction of a simple and eflicient device that is inexpensive to construct and which is very durable and positive in operation.
With this and other objects in View the invention comprises certain other novelconstructions and combinations of parts as will be illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the following description and in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved ar holder.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of one of the ends of the jaws.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my jar holder.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another form of my holder.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary enlarged view of one of the ends of the jaws of the holder illustrated in Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 11 designates a pair of inverted substantially U-shaped jaws, pivotally connected at 2 by any suitable fastening means such as rivets.
Each jaw 1 is formed preferably of a thin strip of metal, and near the lower ends of each jaw, and upon the outer edge, is formed a receiving notch 3 receiving a suitable yieldable or elastic band 4. The band 4 on the lower ends of each jaw is stitched at its center, at 5, so as to prevent accidental displacement of the band should any undue strain be placed thereon during operation or handling of the jar holder by the operator.
The notches 3 efliciently preventthe bands 4 from sliding 01f the lower ends of the jaws, and said bands securely grip the sides of the jar, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the construction is identical to the constructlon shown in Fig. 1 except that the notching feature at the lower ends of each jaw 1s different. The notches in the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 are each formed by slltting the lower end of the jaw as at 6, produclng a bifurcated end, and this lower slitted end is cut out or notched at 7 so that whlle the band 4 can be forced up in the bifurcation 6, after the band 4, has been passed beyond the notched or shouldered end 7, it will rest against said end as if said band were in a pocket, locking the band agamst accidental displacement.
It will be seen that in the modifications shown in Figs. 1 and 4, that I have provided on substantially U-shaped jaws notched structures for receiving. bands, which is a decided improvement, with reference to the simplicity and eficiency of the device, over the structure disclosed in my prior U. S. Patent No. 1,231,642, issued July 3, 1917.
What I claim is:
1. A jar holder comprising a pair of inverted substantially U-shaped jaws pivotally connected together near their center, each jaw being formed from a flat strip of metal, each jaw provided near its outer ends with notches having shouldered portions therein, a band in said notches and bearing against said shouldered portions and being prevented from accidental displacement olf the jaw by said shouldered portions, and said band being stitched near its center, substantially as shown and described.
2. A jar holder comprising pivotally connecting jaws, each jaw provided with ends having bifurcations formed therein between the sides thereof, each bifurcation be ing narrowest at its outer end, producing a shouldered or retaining portion, and jar surrounding means within the bifurcated portions and filling the same except their narrowest portions and being retained in said bifurcations by the shoulders formed therein by the narrowest portions of the bifurcations.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature. RUFUS A. PARENT.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
