To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DALE P. CARTWRIGHT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at city of Fort Vayne, county of Allen State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Purifying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices adapted tobe used in connection with a compressed gas refrigerating system.
The device is intended to be interposed in the conduit conveying the gas or fluid under pressure.
The object of my invention briefly stated is to provide means whereby substance foreign to the ammonia or other gas may be precipitated before it passes through the controlling valve and collected in a reservoir from whence it may be drained, thus delivering the gas relieved of such impurities.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawing which is a vertical section of two valves.
l indicates a valve seat and 2 a valve stern adapted to register with said valve seat, 3 is a port leading to the valve and 4 is an exhaust port therefrom.
5 is an annular chamber surrounding the valve seat l, the base of which is at a leved lower than that of the valve seat 1.
6 is a valve seat and 7 a stem for the same.` while 8 is an exhaust port leading from the base of the annular chamber or reservoir 5 to drain said reservoir when said stem is withdrawn to open the valve 6.
I have found in the operation of a refrigerating system such as that described that the ammonia coming from the compressor carries in suspension certain foreign bodies which are heavier than the ammonia, and will be precipitated when the fluid is at restor not in active liow. This is the normal condition of the ammonia as it stands before the valve in the port 3. In view of the fact that the reservoir 5 is of a lower level than the valve seat 1, such foreign matter will fall into said reservoir Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the commissioner of Eatents,

and remain there, while the lighter fluids will pass through the retaining valve under pressure. This accumulation when con` tinued for a period of time will fill said reservoir 5 when by opening the port 8 through the valve G, such accumulation will drain or be blown on".
My invention therefore consists in providing a reservoir adjacent the valve and at a lower level thereto.
I do not intend to limit myself to the particular structures shown but claim my improvement in whatever form it may be ernbodied. l
That I claim is:
A compressed gas purifying device for refrigerating systems embodying a casing provided with an interior chamber, inlet and exhaust ports, the exhaust port being of less area than the inlet port for insuring the flooding of the chamber, andzbotlr'of which ports are positioned above the base of the chamber whereby a reservoir is formed in which is deposited the precipitants which separate from the gas as such gas passes through the chamber, and a valve coperating with the exhaust port, independently of the inlet port, for regulating the passage of gas through the exhaust port while the inlet port is left unobstructed, in combination with a drawoff duct at the base of the chamber, leading out of the chamber and out of the system with which the device is associated, for allowing of the scavenging of the precipitants out of the system irrespective of the position of the valve which controls the exhaust port, and a normally closed, manually operable valve for con trolling the draw-off duct, whereby the reservoir may be scavenged without interrupting the circulation of the gas through the refrigerating system.
