COMBINATION TRUNK, LA UNDRY-BASKET, AND BATH-TUB.
Application filed June 10, 1914.
v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we. OLE C. LEE and HANNAH LEE, citizens of the United States, residing at Ronan, in the county of Missoula,
. State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination 'lrunks, Laundry-Baskets, and Bath-Tubs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in household furniture.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a device which may be used as a combined trunk, laundry basket and bathtub, the device being efiicient in all of these uses' i A further object of the invention resides in the provision of such a device which is durable in use and which comprises a minimum number of parts so that it is light in weight and may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
Reference is' had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, with the tray removed, Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the structure shown in Fig. 1, but showing the tray in place. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view showing the tray in place, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the tray folds.
"Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the body .portion of the device is shown as comprising the bottom 5, end walls 6 and side walls 7. Secured by the hinges 8 to one of the side walls is a cover 9. This cover and the other side wall are provided with the usual coacting elements of the lock 10 and clasps 11. The end walls have secured thereto handles 12 whereby the device may be easily transported. In the corners of the body portion at the junctions of the walls 6 and 7 are-sockets 13 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916:.
Serial No. ,844,316.
which have screw threaded longitudinally extending holes 14: therein. Adjustably mounted in these holes are casters 15 having threaded shanks 16, which shanks extend into the holes 14.
Slides 17 are rigidly secured to the under face of the bottom 5 by rivets 18 passing through horizontal portions 19. Webs 20 extend downwardly therefrom vertically and are adapted to support the device, when deslred.
In using the device as a trunk, a. tray is provided which comprises four rectangular strips 21. Two of the strips are so secured together by the hinges 22 that they cannot swing downwardly at their pivoted ends, and the other strips are secured to these strips and adapted to swing inwardly. Thus the tray may be folded, but when in extended position presents a strong structure. For securing the tray in the body portion, the free side edges of the outer stripsare provided 6 and extending inwardly therefrom is a.
tubular inember 25 which is threaded on its .inside at each of its ends as at 26 and 27. .A plug 28,hav1ng a finger piece 29 isscrewed into the outer end of the member 25 into engagement with the screw threads 26, and a plug 30 is screwed into engagement with the threads 27 on the inner end of the member 25. This latter plug 30, however, may be replaced by a cork if desired for the sake of convenience.
The body portion of the device is formed of a plurality of metal plates connected to form a water tight compartment. this construction also insuring the provision of a vermin-proof trunk or laundry basket. For strengthening the structure of the device, suitable diagonal brace strips 31 are provided.
\Vhen'the device is used as a trunk, the shanks 16 of the casters 15 are screwed into the sockets only far enough so that the slides 17 are raised from the ground. The device is consequently supported on the casters. When it is desired to use the device as a tub, however, the shanks 16 are screwed farther into the sockets 13 so that the lowermost portions ofthe casters 15 are above-the lower edges of the sides 17 and the" device is supported on the said slides. The-body portion may then be filled with water and the de-- vice used as a tab.
If it is desirable to draw the water from the device. the plug '28 is removed and a hose screwed into its place on the threads '26. The inner plug 30 is then removed from the member 25 and the water allowed to liow from the device through the hose.
From the foregoing it is observed that a very simple structure has been provided which is etlicient as a trunk, laundry basket or wash-tub and which will require little or no change to adapt it to its various functions.
What is claimed is: A combined trunk, bath tub, and laundry basket comprising a body portion downwardly extending skids rigidly secured tov In testimony whereof, we atfix our signa two Witnessses. OLE C. LEE. HANNAH LEE.
