ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN STEEL POCKET-COIJ'PLING.
Specification of Letters Yatent.
Application filed August 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, Ronna'r E. L. J ANNEY, and resident f Chicago, in the county of Cook and State pt Illinois, have invented certain new an useful Improvements in Pocket-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car couplers, and has particular reference to a novel means for adjusting the height of pocket couplers.
It is common to provide the pockets which are attached to the end sills of locomotives, or cars, with a shelf projecting laterally from the pocket and adapted to underlie and support the coupler which is mounted in the pocket, the intention being that a portion of the weight of the coupler shall be supported independently of the pivot. It has been found, however, that the wear incident to service permits downward tilting of the coupler, this tilting finally reaching a point beyond the permissible limits. Means are therefore commonly provided for raising the coupler to its correct height, and my invention is particularly directed to such means as will enable the use of simple devices for raising the coupler to its required height.
Ihe invention will be more readily under- SO'istood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherei Figure 1 is a pocket and a coupler mounted therein, my improvement being applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the tray which cooperates with the pocket and conpler, and Fig. 4. is an edge elevation of the tra eferring more particularly to the drawings, it will be seen 10, having a flared side opening within which a pivot pin 11 is seated. A coupler 12 is provided with a short shank 13, which seats in the recess and is engaged by. the pin. The coupler is adapted for horizontal swinging movement with the pin as a center. The pocket 10 is provided with a horizontal shelf and is adapted 14:, which underliesthe coupler to be engaged by the lower portion 15 thereof, this shelf acting as an auxiliary support coupler.

My improvement consists in the applicat1on of a tray, consisting of a flat plate 16, havlng upstanding flanges 17, which are interrupted at one side to permit the tray to,
engage the lower portion 15 of the After having been applied, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be seen that the tray cannot escape, bemg held in place by the weight of the coupler and adapted to slide horizontally with the coupler. The tray itself may serve as a means for restoring the coupler to its proper position after it has begun to tllt, and any further tilting may be overcome by inserting one or more shims, such as shown at 18, in Fig. 4, in the tray. These shims may be of any desired shape and if they are of suflicient length to lie within the vertical flanges 17 of the tray, they cannot escape therefrom. The shims may be constructed of any waste pieces of sheets or plates which may be found in railroad yards.
It will be seen that the improvement adapts itself for general use without expense and provides a simple and economical means for maintaining the coupler at its required height. 3
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pocket having a shelf, a coupler mounted in the pocket and overlying said'shelf, and a the .shelf and pocket and serving as a means coupler.
for adjusting the height of the coupler, sub- ROBERT E. L. JANNEY.
