Description

A. PALIS.
COLLAR.
APPLlCATlON FILED MAY 18, 1915.
Patented May 2, 1916.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AGATHOPOULOS PALIS. OF NEW YORK. N. Y.
COLLAR.
Application filed May 18. 1915.
lie it known that l. \t;.\'l'littl'tlt Lo l.\|.|s. a su ject of the hing ot' tlreece. residing at t West 'l\vent vninth street. in the city. county and State of New York. have in- \ented new and uset'nl Improvements in tollars. ot which the following is a specitieation.
My invention relates to shirt collars and particularly to those of the turn-down type.
With an ordinary turn-down collar,
wherein the neck-tie used is passed com-- pletely around the same through the space between 'l'olds. great ditliculty i experienced in adjusting the tie while the knot is being tied. owing to the tact that the"-. tie binds between the t'olds. Numerous ways have been devised t'or overcoming this di tlieultv. but in so far as I am aware no trul v practical and etlicient construction has been produced.
lt is therefore my purpose to provide collar which is not open to the disadvantage mentioned. aml which is capable of retaining extremely short neck-ties. whereby the latter may he imlnut'actnred at a reduction in labor and cost of material.
To these ends the invention consists inthe combination and construction of parts hereinat'ter more particularly set forth and claimed. and illustrated in the accompany ing drawing. in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar constructed in accordance with the pret'erred embodiment of the invention. one corner of the outer t'old being upturned to reveal the [lap construction: Fig. 2 is a bot t m. plan view partly broken away. the outer I'old having its normal form: Fig 2. is a perspective \iew ot' a modilied l orin ot the device. partly broken away: and l ig. l is a front elevation of a portion of the prel'erred t'orm c llar. partly in se tion. showing the manner in which a necktie is applied to the slotted tlaps. I
llel'erring to the drawing. in Figs. 1 and the prel'erred embodiment of the invention is illustrated. wherein a tnrmlown collar is provided between its inner and outer t'olds l and 2 respcctivelv. with vertically extending laps 23 which project outward from the inner told adjacent to the respective attaching tabs lot the collar. These tlaps are formed by doubling the inner told l at these points and then stitching the douhled portions together to form the desired Specification of Letters Patent.

tlaps. The llaps are provided with verti cally extending lot 5 which are ltll ttlll tiall v eo-extensive and are adapted t have a neeletie threaded therethrough in the manner indicated. when the collar is pro erly applied to the necleband ot a shirt.'
When the collar is thus applied. the outermost attaching tab l will have its end engaged between the inner tab and the corresponding slotted tlap, it being understood that both collar tabs are equal in length. The outer tab will thus be secured against displacement in an etl'ective manner and will not interfere with the attachment of the tie to the tlaps in the manner shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
In Fig. 3 a modification is illustrated. In this instance, a detachable member 6 in the form of an elongated strip is provided for interchangeable use in connection with various forms of turn-down collars. This strip is intended to be constructed substantially equal in length to a collar of a given size and is adapted to be. inserted between the folds of the same. This strip is provided medially and in its end tabs with buttonholes 7 and 8 respectively, which are adapted to register with the corresponding hutton-holes ot' the collar proper. Slotted flaps i are provided upon this strip and are relatively situated the same as the integrally tor-med flaps shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
It obvious that the detachable member j'nst described may be used in connection with a great number of collars of the proper sixg. and it's use will not involve the re modeling ot those collars which are in use at the present time.
ln a collar constructed in accordance with Either term of the invention it is desirable that the slotted tlaps shall be spaced a con siderable distance apart. but free access thereto must be possible. In order to permit this spacing ol the tlaps and at the same time facilitate the application of neck-ties thereto. the meeting edges of the outer fold of the collar are provided with registering recesses 10 which are substantiall eo-eXtenive with the slots in the tlaps. These reprovided by these co-acting recesses Will also accommodate the knot of the tie both during and after adjustment of the same.
7 Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
A turn-down collar having tie-attaching flaps projecting outwardly With respect to its inner fold into the tie space and located adjacent to the meeting ends of the collar, the said flaps being provided with vertically the vertical edge of each recess being contiguous to the vertical edge of the corresponding flap.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
