Be it known-that I, GEORGE of Rochester, inthe county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Pumps; and I do hereby declare the followingtobe a full, lclear, and exact descriptionof the saine, reference being had to the accompany- -ing drawings, and to the referencenumerals marked thereon. l
My present invention has for its object to provide a pump adapted particularly to be used for con'ipressing` air or other gases in which the arts are so arranged that excessive heating of the piston is obviated and Y the parts are kept thoroughly lubricated without the liability .of the oil, o r .other lubricating substance, being carried into the Y pressure line of pipe.
To these and other ends theinvention consists in certain Iimprovements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

A pump constructed in accordance with my invention is capable of use for a variety of purposes and is particularly adapted to be used as an air-pump arranged to be driven by the engine of an automobile :for supplying air under pressure for any purpose for which it may be desired. The construction ol' the parts of the pump permit it to be driven at high speed and to compress air under high pressures without becoming heated. I claim as my invention:
1. In a pump, the combination with a cvfinder having a body portion of given dial?`r eter and an end portion o1c greater diameter, apertures formed through the wall of the cylinder for admitting air thereto, an inrela-tion to the side and end Walls o-the cylinder, the outer face of the head being directly exposed to air admitted to the cylinder through said apertures,` a piston guided in the body of the cylinder and having an annular rim movable in the larger portion of the cylinder in, spaced relation towthe Walls thereof, said rim being in engagement with the aforementioned head, the outer surface of the rim being directly exposed to the air admitted through said apertures, and inletl and outlet valves arranged on the head. 2. In a pump, the combination with a cylinder having a body portion of given diameter and an end portion of greater diameter,
apertures formed through the wall of theA cylinder for admitting air thereto, an inwardly extending head mounted on the cylinder disposed in spaced relation to the side and end Walls thereof, the outer face of the inwardly extending head being directly ex-` posed to air admitted to the cylinder through Said apertures, a piston guided in the body of the cylinder and having an annular rim movable in the larger portion of the cylinder in -spaced relation to the walls thereof, said rim. being in engagement with the aforementioned inwardly extending head, the inner and outer surfaces of the rim being directly exposed to air ad- -mitted throughsaid apertures, and inlet'and outlet valves arrangedonthe head.
3. In a pump, the combination with a cylinder having an enlarged upper end provided with apertures for admitting air thereto and a crank case -at its lower end, channels connecting its enlarged upper end with the crank case, an inwardly extending head mounted on the cylinder disposed in spaced relation to the side and end walls thereof, the outer face of the inwardly extending head being directly exposed to air admitted to the cylinder through said apertures, a piston guided in the body 'of the cylinder and having an annular rim movable in the. larger portion of the cylinder in spaced relation to the walls thereof, said rim surrounding the aforementioned inwardly extending head,'the inner and outer surfaces of the rim being exposed to air admitted through said apertures, and inlet and lower end, said cylinder having channelsl connecting its enlarged upper end with the crank case, of a piston guided lin the cylindef'having yan end rim projecting into said enlargement of the cylinder and a head on the latter projecting into the cylinder and a packing ring on the head ccperating with the inner wall of the rim of the piston and inlet and outlet valves carried on said head.
5. In a pump, the combination with a cylinder having a body of given diameter and an end portion of greater diameter which is open to the atmosphere, of a piston guided in the body ofthe cylinder and having a rim moving into and out of the enlarged end of the cylinder, a cylinder head engaging within the rim of the piston and .a post supporting itfoffless diameter than the head and having means for attachment engaging the cylinder.
6.
