To all whomz't may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN W. FRYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Charles, in the county of Madison and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gate-Operating Means, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to swinging gates, and more particularly to the class of gate openers.
' The'primary object of the invention is the provision of a gate opener in which the gate proper may be swung from closed to opened position, or vice versa, at either side thereof, the gate, when closed being locked, and is automatically released for the opening thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a gate opener in which the weight of the gate is relieved from the levers which are manually actuated for the opening and closing of the said gate, thereby requiring little exertion on the part of a person, when operating the opener.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a gate opener, which is simple in construction, strong, durable, reliable and efficient in operation, as well as being easily and conveniently manipulated, and that may be manufactured at a minimum expense.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate and opener therefor constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of the gate, with one of the latch posts removed, thus showing in detail the manner of locking the said gate. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latch member removed from the gate.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates spaced vertical gate posts, and 6 the vertical latch posts, the same being arranged on opposite sides of a roadway, respectively, in the usual well-known manner, and between said gate posts 5 is airas a counterweight.

Carried by the opposite end of the gate is a latch, comprising a spring bar 11, one end of which is fixed to the gate, while its opposite end is inturned to form a handle or finger engaging extremity 12, the bar being bent intermediate its ends to provide a latch shoulder 13 adapted for locking engagement with a keeper pin 14 fixed transversely in the latch posts 6, so that on swinging the gate to closed position the shoulder- 13 will engage the pin 14, thereby locking the said gate closed.
The gate is moved and simultaneously the latch member released by means of a gate opener, comprising hand operated rocking levers 15, the same pivoted at 16 upon the upper ends of supporting posts 17 mounted in the ground at opposite sides of the gate 7, contiguous to the gate posts 5, the levers 15 bein provided at their inner ends with eye mem ers 18, to which are loosely connected pull links 19, the latter being also loosely connected to laterally projecting headed studs 20 formed on a swinging yoke 21 which is connected to the gate 7 by means of a pivot 22, so that upon pulling downwardly upon the free ends of either of the levers 15, the gate may be swung from closed to opened position, or vice versa.
Connected with the yoke 21 is a pull or latch releasing rod 23, the same being connected to the spring bar 1 1 forming the latch member. Thus, when the yoke 21is moved, upon operating the levers 15, the rod 23 Will be pulled upon, retracting the spring bar 11, and disengaging its shoulder 13 from the'keeper pin 14,-thereby unlocking swinging the same the gate prior tothe to open position.
