Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. JOHNSON, 0F OWEGO, AND J NO. J. SPEED, OF ITHACA, NEW YORK.
STOP-COCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,181, dated June 21, 1839.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES F. JOHN- soN, of Cwego, in the county of Tioga, and Jol-IN J. SPEED, of Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing a. Valve Stop-Cock Applicable to the Drawing of Molasses and other Fluids from Casks or other Vessels; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
The accompanying drawing represents a section of our stop cock along its axis.
The body of it, a, a, may be cast of block tin, pewter` or other metal, and it is furnished with screw at Z), b, to hold it securely in the vessel. At its inner end c, c, it is rimmed out conically, so as to adapt it to receive a valve (Z, made of disks of leather, or other suit-able material confined together' by metallic plates, and made true so as accu rately to fit the conical opening in the cock. To this valve is attached a rod, or wire c, e, which extends from it through the axis of the cock, and passing out through an open ing to which it is fitted so as to slide easily at. It may project out an inch, more or less, and is to have on it a ring, or thumb piece at g, by which to move it in and out. To prevent the valve CZ from being depressed when it is pushed inward, we apply four, or any other convenient number of guide wires It, It, attached to the inner plate of the valve. A lateral opening` at' c', serves for the discharge of the liquid. 7e do not emply any spring, or other contrivance for closing the valve, but simply draw the rod forward, having found experimentally that when the conical valve and seat are not too abrupt, there is no danger whatever of leakage.
hat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The within described Inode of constructing stop cocks for the drawing of molasses or other liquids, that is to say, a stop cock .furnished with a simple conical valve, and
operated by means of a rod, without spiral or other springs, substantially as herein set forth.
