To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM REUBOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and 1mproved Cap for Meat-Cookers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to cooking utensils and has particular reference to cookers of the character described and claimed-'in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,006,792, issued to me on the 24th day of October, 1911.
Among the objects of the present invention is to improve the cap portion of this structure so as to make it easier to manipulate and more reliable in use than previous devices.
1With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the in- Vention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cap portion of the device; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the core or wedge portion of the cap.
As in the previous patent, the cooker includes a receptacle 10 of strong rigid material such as metal, and lined with porcelain or other suitable sanitary material such as indicated at 11. This receptacle constitutes a main holder and mold for the meat or other commodity being cooked under pressure set up by the cap structure.
After the ham or other commodity is introduced into the receptacle, the cap 12 constituting as a whole a plug or closure for the cylindrical portion of the receptacle is forced downwardly thereinto in a press or by other means until the commodity in the receptacle is formed to conform to the interior of the receptacle and cap, and then the cap is tightened or spread so as to bind upon the inner wall or surface of the receptacle.
As shown herein, the cap comprises a shell 13 and a core 14: movable relatively to each other longitudinally of the entire device by any suitable means such as a strong rotary screw 15. rThe shell 13 is of hollow cylindrical form and open at 16 on one side and having its lower edge 17 tapered in cross section as shown best in Fig. 1. The upper end of the shell is tted with a strong metal cap 18 having a flange 18 fitted down over the end of the shell and against a shoulder 13 where it is secured by a series of bolts, rivets or the like 19. The screw 15 is journaled in the center of the cap 18 where it is held by a bearing ring 20 and prevented from endwise movement with respect to the cap and shell. r1`he upper end of the screw is fitted with a handle 21 typifying any suitable means for rotating the screw forcibly. The threaded portion or lower end of the screw coperates with a nut 22 secured rigidly in the conical portion of the core 14 as by strong vertical bolts 23 extending longitudinally through the core and ears 22 of the nut. The opening 16 of the shell is tapered and flaring outwardly or downwardly toward the end 17 thereof. The core 14k is provided with a wedgeshaped projection 14ea corresponding in form to and fitted in the flaring opening 16 and hence having an outer cylindrical surface constituting in effect a continuation of the cylindrical surface of the shell 13. It may be noted in this connection that the shell and core are preferably made in practice from a single block of suitable material such as wood, and the core and its wedge are sawed out of the shell, the cuts of the saw forming the cooperating conical and wedgeshaped walls of these twoparts.
Force applied to the screw 15 to rotate it in a clockwise direction or toward the right has the effect of drawing upwardly upon the nut 22 and core 14, .causing the wedge and cone to expand or spread the shell 18 and hence causing it to bind firmly upon the inner wall ofthe receptacle and yet maintain the true cylindrical form of the shell, insuring a positive waterand steam-tight closure for the receptacle irrespective of the expansion of the shell. 5. The herein described closure cap for cooking receptacles, the same comprising a cylindrical wooden shell having a conical bore and having an opening on one side with downwardly flaring walls, a conical wooden core `'fitted in the shell bore, a wooden wedge member carried by the core and fitted between said flaring walls, the outer surface of the wedge conforming to the outer cylindrical surface of the shell and making a steam-tight closure for the receptacle, and means to cause thc core to move positively and forcibly either up or down with respect to the shell.
