STRIP-SAWING MACHINE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 11, 1915. Serial No. 66,237.
To all whom it may concern-.7
Be it known that I, GEORGE Gon'rz, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strip- Sawing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to sawing machines particularly designed for use in simultaneously cutting a plurality of strips from a single board said strips varying in width.
It is the object of the invention to obtain a simple construction of adjusting means for setting the saws, and to this end the invention comprises the novel construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings: Figure l is a plan view of the machine; Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section.
A is the table mounted upon a suitable frame B.
C is a central saw mounted upon an arbor D, which is journaled in non-adjustable bearings E and E. The inner bearing E is mounted upon a bridge E above the table, providing sufficient clearance thereunder for the passage of the work.
F and G are saws arranged in planes parallel to the plane of the saw 0 and mounted upon arbors H and I arranged in alinement with each other beneath the table. These arbors are journaled in bracket bearings J and K, which slidably engage guideways L upon the frame of the machine, so as to be adjustable longitudinally of the arbors. These bracket bearings are also provided with arms L and L which have threaded sleeves M M engaging difierentially threaded portions N N (preferably right and left) of a rotary shaft 0. One end of the shaft 0 is longitudinally adjustably mounted in a bearing P upon the frame, while the opposite end has mounted thereon the relatively rotatable sleeve Q; externally threaded and engaging a correspondingly threaded hearing it on the frame. The sleeve Q is provided with a hand-wheel S for rotatively adjusting the same, while a lock-nut T engaging the threaded sleeve serves to secure the same in position. Collars U on the shaft O abut against the opposite ends of the sleeve to hold the same from longitudinal movement, and a hand-wheel V on said shaft forms a means for rotatively adjusting the same.
lVith the construction as described, to set the saws for sawing strips of prede termined width, the spacing of the saws F and G in relation to each other is first adjusted to correspond to the combined width of two strips plus the width of the sawkerf for separating the same. This adjustment is made by rotating the hand-wheel V, which through the right and left or dilferential threads N N, will move the arms L and L relative to each other, thereby varying the spacing between the saws F and G. \Vhen these saws are properly set, the locknut T is loosened and the hand-wheel S is adjusted, which through the threaded sleeve Q, bearing R and collars U will move the shaft 0 longitudinally, thereby carrying both of the saws F and G. This will enable the operator to properly space one of said saws in relation tothe non-adjustable saw C, and as the combined width of the strips has been previously adjusted, this will automatically set the third saw.
The machine as above described is useful in making a variety of articles, such for instance as boxes, in which the cover overlaps one or more of the sides and lies flush with the edge of the other sides. Strips of proper relative width for making both sides can thus be sawed simultaneously.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a sawing machine, the combination with a frame, of a rotary saw mounted thereon in fixed position, a pair of rotary saws respectively upon opposite sides of said fixed saw in parallel planes, means for adjusting the latter saws in relation to each other, and independent means for adjusting said saws as a unit in relation to said fixed saw.
2. In a sawing machine, the combination with a frame, of a rotary saw mounted thereon in fixed position, a pair of rotary saws upon opposite sides of said fixed saw, mountings for the latter saws adjustable upon said frame, a rotary shaft having differentially threaded portions for engaging correspondingly threaded bearings in the mountings of said adjustable saws to move the same in relation to each other upon the rotation of said shaft, and means for adjusting said shaft longitudinally to simuL Patented Apr. as, rare. l
one side of said frame taneously adjust both of said adjustable saws in relation to said fixed saw.
In a sawing machine, the combination with a frame, 'of an arbor mounted on said frame in fixed position, a rotary saw upon said arbor, a pair of saws respectively on opposite sides of said fixed saw, arbors therefor, mountings for said arbors adjustable upon said frame, means operable from for adjusting said mountings in relation to each other, and
;means for independently adjusting said mountings as a unit to adjust said pair of saws in relation to said fixed saw.
4:. In a sawing machine, the combination with a frame, of a rotary saw mounted thereon in fixed position, a pair of rotary saws respectively upon opposite sides of Copies of this patent may be obtained for said five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0.
said fixed saw, mountings therefor adjustable upon said frame, a rotary shaft having differentially threaded portions engaging mountings to relatively adjust the latter upon the rotation of the shaft, a bearing on said frame in which said shaft is longitudinally adjustable, a threaded sleeve rotatively adjustable and longitudinally fixed on said shaft, and a correspondingly threaded bearing on said frame for engaging said sleeve, cooperating therewith for the longitudinal adjustment of said shaft.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
