Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH R. TRUE, OF RICHMOND, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPlNG-CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,072, dated August 15,1871.
To all whom lit may concern:
Be it known that I, JEEEMIAE R. TRUE, of
4 Richmond, of the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine, have invented an Improved Dumping- Carriage; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of it.
In such drawing, A denotes a common wheelcarriage or cart, having an aperture, a, through its bottom b, and provided with two shuttersor doors, c o, to such aperture. The said shutters are hinged at their inner edges upon the rotary shaft d of the shutter-restorer B, and when in horizontal positions they are held so by two latches, C C, hinged to opposite sides of the car riage-body, and arranged and formed as shown. A spring, c, fixed to the body serves to press each latch inward and retainl it in engagement with the shutter. Furthermore, there is to each latch a tripper, D, composed of a shaft, f, a crank, g, and an arm, h. The shaft f, arranged as shown, is supported in bearings or hangers i The crank g, which projects down from the inner end of the shaft, has its wrist extended into so as to turn in the latch. The arm It -projects from the shaft at a right angle. By means of the tripper the latch may be thrown out of engagement with the shutter, so as to allow the latter to fall into a vertical position. The restorer B consists of the shaft d and one or more arms, k, extended at right angles from it, as shown. It also has an arm or handle, l., applied to its rear end, the shaft being supported in suitable bearings m m projecting from the bottom ofthe carriage-body. The restorer, previous to the dropping of the shutters, is to be or may be turned so that its arms may stand in or about in vertical positions, after which, by moving the trippers, each of the latches may be disengaged from the shutters so as to allow them to fall down and the load of the cart or carriage to be discharged through the opening of the bottom of the body.
In order to close the shutters a person should lay hold of the handle of the restorerand turn the latter against the shutters in succession, so
as to force each up into a horizontal position, in which it will be caught and latched in the mean time.
A carriage may be made with but a single door or shutter to its bottom opening, in which case the restorer and but one latch and one tripper will suffice therefor, all being to operate as described. y
I make no claim to any thing, colnbination, or arrangement of parts shown in either of the United States patents 88,27 7 7 9,311, 54,747, neitherl showing a dulnping-carriage constructed like that hereinbefore described, in which the shutters are hinged to the shaft of the restorer, and such restorer arranged between them so as to operate each in succession, one restorer answering for both shutters; therefore,
I claim- Y l. The single restorer B and the two shutters c c, arranged together and with the body of the carriage, and applied so as operate substantially as specified.
2. The arrangement of the tripper or trippers D with the shutters c c, their latches C (l, and the carriage-body, all being applied as set forth.l
3. The improved dumping-carriage A as made or provided with the opening a in its bottom, the shutters c c, the restorer B, the latches C C, and the trippers D l), all arranged substantially in Vthe mann er and to operate as explained.
JEREMIAII R. TRUE.
