IGNITION DEVICE FOR GAS-ENGINES.
App1ication filed March 31, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Igni tion Devices for Gas-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ignition devices for gas engines and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for the purpose of igniting gases which is automatically timed by the action of the piston.
I accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which is shown a vertical section of a piston and cylinder provided with my improved device.
Similar characters refer to similar parts.
1 is a gas engine cylinder of the usual construction provided with a piston 2 in the usual manner. In the upper face of the piston 2 I seat a block 3 preferably by means of a screw threaded socket 4 formed in the piston 2. In the block 3 I provide a contact pin 5 of steel or the like, adapted to strike an ignition block 6 of flint or like material, which is preferably set in a screw threaded plug 7 extending through the head 8 of the cylinder 1. On the plug 7 I provide a finger hold 9 whereby the plug 7 may be removed for the purpose of renewing the ignition block 6. My device being thus assembled the mixture of gas and air is admitted through the port 10 to the ignition chamber 11. The raising of the piston to the maxi mum of its stroke will bring the contact pin 5 into frictional engagement with the ignition block 6 which, by reason of the said parts being of steel and flint or the like will solely through the impact cause a spark to be produced in the mixture of gas and Specification of Letters Patent.

air thereby exploding the mixture and propelling the piston to the opposite end of the cylinder in the usual well known manner.
I have thus shown and described the preferred form of my device but I do not intend to limit myself to the precise form shown as it is obvious that changes may be made without departing from my invention which is to provide in the cylinder of a gas engine at the point where the gaseous mixture is to be exploded to propel the piston, an ignition device comprising two materials such as flint and steel or the like which are brought into frictional contact in the gaseous mixture, by the action of the piston.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. An explosive engine involving a mem her to be operated under the force of the explosion and an ignition device arranged adjacent said member, said ignition device including an element carried by the member and a second element arranged in the path of movement of the first named element, the respective elements being arranged to impact in a predetermined position of. the member to produce by said impact a spark for the ignition of the explosive mixture.
A gas engine including a cylinder, a piston therein to be operated under the force of an explosive mixture, an ignition block adjustablv mounted in the cylind? and a contact carried by the piston to impact the ignition block and produce an explosive mixture igniting spark solely through said impact.
Signed at the city of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey this 28th day of March, A. D. 1913.
