Be it known that I, J OSEPH TRACY, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident'of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan,
5 in the cou'ntyand State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Exhaust-Valve and Igniter, of .which the following is a full, clear, and exac-t description. I
v This invention relates to improvements in combined exhaust-valves and igniters for combustion-engines; and the object isto provide an exhaust-valve with a simple, inex-' pensive, and reliable means for igniting the charge of combustion agent.
I will describe acombined exhaust-valve and igniter embodying my invention" and then pointout the-novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specific a-' tion, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Referring to the drawings,1 designates the combustion-chamber of an engine, which com municates with the usual exhaustport '2.

35 The inner end of the stem is provided with a "longitudinal bore 6, which-forms a chamber for the entrance of gas and air. In the mouth of the' bore is a threaded plug 7, having a perforation 8,.which forms a restricted outlet for 6. This rebut it is preferable in fast-running engines wheres. quick outflow of flame and quick ignition are required, and of course the perforation may be made of any size to suit conditions.
The operation is as follows: After the engine has been in operation a short time the valve-stem becomes heated by the exhaust to a sufiicient degree to ignite" the combustion agent. admitted to the combustion-chamber 1', a portion thereof will enter the bore of the valvestem, where it will be immediately ignited, and the flame will discharge into and ignite the large body of gas andair in the combns-' tion-chamber of the engine.
When the charge of gas and air is It will be seen thatadevice embodying my invention is very simple in-its arrangement and construction, and there are no extra parts or additions carried by the valve that would be liable to be broken or that would add expense to the valve construction.
