To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, FLOYD O. ENFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fleasant Lake, in the county of Steuben and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auto- Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vehicle jacks, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a jack of simple construction which will lift an axle and wheel of an automobile, and hold them in elevated position without the expense of much power.
Another object of the invention is to provide a jack to be operated by foot power, and which will hold the axle elevated by the relative disposition of the pivotal points of the foot lever and the lifting member.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illus trated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation showing the jack in use, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the jack showing the foot lever thrown outward.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1. designates the support for the jack, said support being formed preferably of a metal bar bent into substantially U-shape, the cross member 2 of the support forming the base to rest upon the ground or'fioor. Pivotally connected near the base to the support 1 are metal links 8, said links being pinned at 4; to the vertical portions of the support 1 on opposite sides. The links 3 are pivoted at 5 to a lifting member 6, comprising space vertical members connected together at their lower ends by the bar 7. The members 6 are provided with a series of perforations 8, and pivotally suspended between the members 6 on the pin 9 is a yoke 10.
The upper ends of the member 6 are curved as at 11, and an operating lever is pivoted at 12 to the curved portions 11. The operating lever comprises two bars placed side by side, and having divergent ends 13, which are pivoted at 14; to the upper ends of support 1. The operating lever is provided at its outer end with a foot pedal .15, having side flanges 16.
The operation of the jack may be briefly described as follows: The axle a of the auto vehicle is inserted in the yoke 10, after the operating lever has been thrown upward into the position shown in Fig. 1, and by placing the foot upon the pedal 15 the op erating lever is depressed to lift the axle and wheel off the ground. The perforations 8 permit a vertical adjustment to accommodate axles of different heights.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that. a jack made in accordance with this invention will lift a heavy vehicle without great power being applied owing to the disposition of the pivoted parts.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as de fined in the claim.
What is claimed is A lifting jack comprising a U-shaped support, the web of said support forming the base, links pivotally connected to the inner faces of the arms of the support adjacent the web, a lifting member comprising a connecting bar, vertical arms connect ed to the opposite ends of the connecting bar, said vertical arms provided with a plurality of spaced openings and their outer ends curved, said links being pivotally secured to the outer face of the vertical bars adjacent the connecting bar, an operating lever comprising a shank having outwardly diverging members at one end pivotally secured in the upper ends of the arms of the U-shaped member their outer ends pivotally connected to the curved arms of the lifting members, the opposite end of the stem pro vided with laterally projecting members at opposite sides thereof to facilitate the moving of said lever downwardly, a yoke adjustably mounted in the openings of the vertical bars of the lifting member to compensate for receiving the different size axles therein, substantially as set forth.
