LOCOMOTIVE-ASH-PAN WING-SUPPGRT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1%, 1916..
Application filed December 4, 1915- Serial No. 65,077.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. DESHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, county of Vanderburg, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Ash- Pan Wing-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locomotive ash pan wing supports.
Heretofore considerable difliculty has been experienced with locomotive ash pans, because they warp and bend out of shape, due to excessive heating and the way the supports have been constructed.
My object is to provide an improved wing supportfor suspending the ash pan from the side frames of the locomotive in a novel manner, whereby a strong and secure suspension of the ash pan is provided without liability of bending or warping, even though the heat is very great.
In carrying out my invention, I form the wing supports of single pieces of sheet metal, cut and bent in an improved manner to conform to, and rest upon, the locomotive side frames and hold the wings down by the weight of the boiler, blocks being interposed between the boiler and the tops of the wings, and in addition, employ wing clamps at intervals, which are bolted to the locomotive side frames and to the sides of the ash pan. The weight of the boiler holds the wings securely on the side frames, the clamps space the ash pan from the side frames and prevent longitudinal or lateral shifting, and the wings combined with the clamps, provide arched connecting structures by which the ash pan is freely suspended from the side frames of the locomotive in such manner that even excessive heat will not bend or warp the parts or cause the ash pan to get out of its proper position beneath the grates.
The invention is set forth hereinafter and the novel features and combinations are recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing so much of the boiler and one side frame of the locomotive as will illustrate the location and adaptation of my invention; Fig. 2, a rear elevation; Fig. 3, a detail of one of the wings after it has been cut and before it is bent; Figs. 1
and 5, opposite side views of the wing; and Fig. 6, a detail of one of the clamps.
The side frames of the locomotive are shown at 1, the axle at 2 and the lower portion of the boiler at the fire-box, at 3. The ash pan 4 and the swinging gates 5 are of the usual construction.
My invention relates solely to the supporting wings or devices for suspending the ash pan from the side frames 1.
The sheet metal pieces 6, of which there are two, one for each side of the ash pan, are first notched transversely as at 7, and, being of the arched form shown in Figs. 2, t and 5, they are then bent to close the notch 7 and to bring them to the form shown in Figs. 4: and 5, the lateral portions 8 of the wings corresponding in outline or contour to the outline or contour of the upper faces 9 of the locomotive side frames 1 on which they rest and on which they are held by the weight of the fire-box legs 3 of the boiler. The boiler rests upon blocks 10, which in turn, rest upon the lateral portions 8 of the wings, thereby securely holding them on the side frames 1. The depending, arched portions of the wings have bolt holes 11, through which pass bolts 12 that connect the wings to the upper edges of the sides of the ash pan. At intervals there are provided arched wing clamps 13 which are secured by the bolts 12, and in turn, are bolted at 14 to the side frames 1, these clamps being shown in detail in Fig. 6.
My invention provides for free suspension of the ash pan, while at the same time providing ample clearance space between theside frames and the sides of the ash pan, and the clamps 13 hold the side of the ash pan away from the frames 1 and also rigidly connect the ash pan to said frames. The clamps and the wings 6 provide for all expansion and contraction occasioned by the heat to which the ash pan is subject and prevent warping and bending out of shape, as has previously occurred.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a locomotive ash pan support, the combination with an ash pan and locomotive side frames, of supporting Wings resting on the side frames and fastened to the ash pan, and Wing clamps fastened to the side frames and to the ash pan.
2. In a locomotive ash pan support, the 5 combination with an ash pan an'dlocomotive side frames, of arched supporting Wings resting on the side frames and fastened to the ash pan, and arched Wing clamps disposed beneath the Wings and fastened to the 10 side frames and 'tothe a-shpan.
3. In a locomotive ash pan support, the
combination with an ash pan and locomotive side frames, of arched supporting Win s resting on the side frames and fastened o the ash pan, arched Wing clamps disposed beneath the Wings and fastened to the side frames and to the ash pan, and retaining blocks resting on the Wings and serving as a support for the boiler.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
JOSEPH C. DESHLER.
