JULIUS WAGNER, OF OBERSTEIN-ON-THE-NAHE, GERMANY.
EXPANSIBLE BRACELET.
Application filed April 30, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUS l/VAGNER, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Oberstein-on-the-Nahe, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Expansible Bracelets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an expanding bracelet composed of primary links alternating with connecting links all of which are formed of metal strips, the connecting links serving for the reception of the springs.
According to the invention the primary links are each bent at one end to form hooks which are directed toward one another which hooks project into the cavity formed by the coils oi the spring. The hooks in the assembled bracelet serve as a support for the spring and produce a secure connection between the links and the spring.
One embodiment of the expanding bracelet is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 shows a partially completed metal strip for forming a primary link (the figure shows the inner side thereof) Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows a formed primary link; Fig. 4; shows in side elevation a metal strip for a connecting link; Fig. 5 a formed connecting link; Fig. 6 is a plan and Fig. 7 a side view partly in section of the bracelet in which some of the links are shown in extended position.
Each primary link consists of the two limbs 9. connected by a narrow bridge 2, which limbs are provided with recesses 2 which serve as guides for the journals 4: of the adjacent connecting link 3 and have pinlike extensions 1. To form the primary link from the partially completed product (shown in Figs. 1 and 2) the limbs 2 are bent at right angles to the bridge 2 and the extensions 1 are bent to form hooks 1 directed toward one another (Fig. 3). Each connecting link consists of a metal strip 3 provided with a recess 3, on the end of which metal strip are provided projections 1. These metal strips 3 are bent in the manner shown in Fig. 5. The recess 3 is intended to serve as a bearing for a coil spring 5.
In assembling the bracelet the springs 5 Specification of Letters Patent.

are introduced between the limbs 2 of the primary links before the latter are completely bent to the form shown in Fig. 3. In this position the connecting links 3 are also introduced between the limbs 2 and the pro ections stare introduced into the recesses 2 WVhile the primary link and connecting link are being assembled the spring is compressed; when the spring is released and the limbs 52 are finally bent into the position shown in Fig. 3 the hooks l engage the cylindrical cavity represented by the interior of the coil spring contained in the adjacent link (Figs. 6 and 7).
By the invention, not only are the groups of links connected in a manner which will insure that the same will be properly guided but also the springs are so fitted that they cannot be dislodged from the links in which they are contained.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In an expansible bracelet, a first primary link comprising an elongated body bent upon itself to dispose its link sides in spaced parallel relation and the bend in said primary link comprising a bar forming a secondary link connecting portion, said link sides being hollow to form opposed elongated guides, the terminal ends of the primary link being reduced to form relatively narrow strips and the latter being bent inwardly between said guides in abutting relation with each other to form a spring holding projection, a secondary spring holding link formed of a strip of material of U- shaped cross section and being bent upon itself with its hollow sides facing each other to longitudinally engage and embrace a spring and the point of bend of said secondary link extending through the primary link next adjacent to the first named primary link for engagement with the link connecting portion of said next adjacent primary link, the terminal ends of said secondary link having guiding studs projecting at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said secondary link and extending into the guides of said first named primary link to form a sliding pivotal connection therewith, and an expansively acting coil spring disposed in said secondary link and having In testimony whereof I have signed my one end mounted on said spring holding name to this specification in the presence of projection and its remaining end abutting tWo subscribing Witnesses.
against that end of said secondary link hav- JULIUS VAGNER. ing sliding pivotal connection With said first Witnesses:
named primary link, substantially as, de- J EAN GRUND,
scribed. CARL GRUND.
