Speoication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,985, dated August 15, 12371. I
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH COLLIER, of Laurel, in the county of Prince George and State of Maryland, have invented an Improved Composition Roller for Dressing-Frames used in manufacturing cotton goods, and for other like purposes, of Which the following is a specification:
My invention con sists in cov erin g a common m etallic roller, AA, which may be either solid or hollow, of any required length and size, With a composition of block-tin, lead, and antimony, I) b, to be composed of equal parts of block-tin and lead and one-iiftieth part of a pound antimony to each pound of the composition. These proportions may be varied to produce the requisite degree of hardness or solidity.
I construct my roller as follows: I take an ordinary iron pipe, A A, ofthe requisite diameter for the roller, and tin it in the usual manner; then insert a head in each end, through the center of which passes a steel or metallic rod or axle, C. I then put a cap, of brass or other metal, d d, upon each end, extending as far above or beyond 'the diameter ofthe pipe as is necessary to contain the composition b b with which the roller is to be covered. The roller is then placed in a mold made for the purpose and the composition fused, and, While in a liquid state, poured into the mold around the outside of the roller, Where it unites with the tinning before placed upon the roller and becomes a part thereof. It is then taken from the mold and planed or turned smooth and true, and is ready for use.
The advantages of this roller consist in its durability, arising from its uniform hardness, and also in being entirely non-corrosive.
What I claim as my invention is- The use of a composition of block-tin, lead, and antimony in the construction of a roller, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
