af @Il y,whom it may concern g fBe it known A that I, STACY` aascitizenofthe United Sta-tes, residing atv Chicago, in the county ofCookand State of lIllinois, have invented a certainnew and use- -f fnl-:Improvement in Side Bearings for Cars, ojwhich the following is a full; elear..con
roller side bearing for railway cai's which consists of few parts, readily assembled, relatlvely cheaply manufactured, and inj which spring means aided by gravity are einployed to always return the rollerl to its central normal position after each actuation.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices, as herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part ot' this' specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a portion of a body bolster and a truck bolster showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my improved roller bearing. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 1:v is a vertical sectional view taken'on the lirici- 4 of Fig. 2.
Insaid drawing, 10 denotes the body bol- Sters-aiid 11 the `truck bolstei's pivotally connected. in the usual manner and between which is mounted my improved roller side bearing designated generally vby thefre'f'erence-A. As shown', s aid bearing is attached to the truck bolster but it may be otherwise attached, as' those skilled in the art will understar-i The roller bearing A, as shown, comprises a base casting 12 having upwardly extended, spaced side Walls 13 -13 and a bottom steel plate insert tread or roller bearing' surface 14. Each of the side walls 13, on its inner face, is provided with a longitudinally extending recess 15, the same having flat bottom Walls 16, upper fiat walls 17 and rounded end walls 18, the upper walls 17 being cut away to forni openings 19 through which the trunnions 20 of the anti-friction roller 23 are adapted to be inserted. Mounted in each of the recesses 15 is a plate spring 21 SIDE nea-RING Fon cARs.

posed between the studs and the lower walls 16 of the recesses.
The operation is as follows 1` Upon pres,- siire being applied to the roller 23 andangii-:g f larnnovement between the holsters, the roller '.23 will roll upon the tread plate 11 and thus in'ove to one side of its central or normal po-A sition. ln so doing, the studs 20 will depress those upwardly inclined portions of the springs 21 over which they roll, arid,
against the tension ot' the spring. Upon releaseot' the pressure -on the roller 23, the springs 2121 which have been pressed down or straightenedwvll immediately return to their normal position which is indicated in Fig. 3 and thus elevate the roller 23 from engagement with the bearing' plate 14. 'lhe roller 23 being now supported byits trunnions '20 on the inclined portions of the cated at 2l. and the length of thewear plate v .9o
14 is made such that the anti-friction roller will always bear thereon within the limits of normalv movement between the' holsters. llpon excessive movement, however, the anti-friction roller will pass off 'of the wear plate and be. supported by its own truniiions 20-20 in thel side walls of the base casting so that the roller will rotate about its own trunnions. und-cr excessive movement, without being bodily moved. In this/way, I provide a compact bearing and yet make provision for any amount of movement between the holsters.
